BMW reported 516 horsepower of combined system output for the original U.S. xDrive50, with a battery rated at 111.5 kWh gross and 105.2 kWh net. A 20-inch wheel configuration received an EPA range of 324 miles, compared with 305 miles for 21-inch wheels and 315 miles for the listed 22-inch wheels. These non-monotonic figures reflect the precisely tested combinations; they should not be simplified into an assumption that every larger wheel necessarily costs the same amount of range.
Ownership trade-offs and limitations
Its quiet cabin and strong acceleration make sense for a buyer looking to replace an executive SUV with an EV. Charging logistics remain central: a claimed peak DC rate describes ideal capability rather than the duration of every public stop. Verify factory wheel specification, optional assistance hardware, service campaigns and the actual charging setup. A used iX can expose owners to luxury-brand tire, body and electronics costs that a basic electricity calculation will not capture.
Worthwhile alternatives
The Mercedes EQE SUV followed a different launch calendar and should not be mistaken for the 2022 EQE sedan. Contemporary alternatives include the Audi e-tron SUV, while the Tesla Model X prioritizes another interior and software philosophy. The iX's value rests in its blend of premium passenger accommodation, an EV-specific architecture and BMW driving character, provided its physical size and charging requirements suit the owner's routine.
2022 identity and data caveats
All three certified range values refer to U.S. 2022 xDrive50 wheel-equipped configurations. Gross and usable battery energy are stated separately; the European 523 PS output convention is not used to replace the U.S. 516 hp quote.
