2022 BMW iX1: Specifications, Variants and 2026 Used Buying Guide
2022 BMW iX1 belongs to the European premium electric compact SUV segment. This research documents EU-market configuration(s) and separates 2022 commercial identity from equipment and certified-test claims in other countries.
2022 identity and market
The BMW iX1 made the X1 family electric in 2022 through a dedicated electric powertrain packaged in the new U11-generation compact SUV. That does not make every U11 X1 an EV; petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid versions have separate systems. The 2022 iX1 record is explicitly European and concerns the initial xDrive30 specification, not later lower-output electric grades.
Engines, electrification and specifications
BMW’s original European specification gives the xDrive30 two electrically driven axles with combined output up to 230 kW or 313 hp including a temporary boost and 494 Nm of torque. The manufacturer’s WLTP range interval is 417–440 km for the model’s configurations. It would be inaccurate to convert that range into EPA miles or assume every wheel and option combination attains its upper bound.
Practical appeal and limitations
The appeal is a compact body combined with a premium cabin and electrical all-wheel drive that can suit commuting and family use. It is not a full-size luxury EV, so rear seat and cargo priorities must be tested against the user’s normal load. Charging frequency, winter consumption and public charging availability can matter more than the official acceleration claim.
Used-owner inspection and servicing
Inspect a used iX1 for charge-port integrity, battery condition, digital service history and infotainment account handover. Confirm the fitted driver assistance and charging options rather than assuming every BMW connected feature is permanent and free. As with any expensive modern EV, tyre and wheel replacement costs can change running expenses substantially even when engine oil servicing disappears.
Alternatives and buying decision
Volvo C40 Recharge, Mercedes EQA and Tesla Model Y occupy different parts of the electric compact premium market. The iX1 fits a buyer prioritising BMW-sized ergonomics in an all-electric drivetrain, but an X1 plug-in hybrid could suit those without dependable access to charging. Careful model-year differentiation prevents 2023 updates from obscuring the 2022 equipment baseline.
