2022 Ford Maverick: Specifications, Variants and Buying Guide
2022 Ford Maverick — this record documents the US formal model-year configuration of the pickup. It does not assume a single worldwide drivetrain, certified range or equipment list.
What changed and why it matters
The 2022 Ford Maverick reintroduced a genuinely small pickup choice to American buyers, using a unibody construction and practical four-door cab rather than the heavier engineering of a traditional midsize work truck. Its standard hybrid powertrain was an important departure for this market segment. Still, the badge alone does not describe a vehicle's intended job: the hybrid front-driver and turbocharged EcoBoost can have substantially different towing capacity, driven wheels and fuel consumption.
Powertrains, batteries and 2022 market specifications
- US · 2.5L hybrid — 2.5 L Atkinson four-cylinder full hybrid; FWD; PowerSplit eCVT. engine displacement l: 2.5; combined output hp: 191; epa combined mpg: 37; max tow lb: 2000. Cycle: EPA gasoline mpg.
- US · 2.0L EcoBoost — 2.0 L turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline; FWD or optional AWD; 8-speed automatic. engine displacement l: 2.0; engine output hp: 250; max tow lb: 2,000 lb standard; 4,000 lb with 4K Tow Package; epa combined mpg: 26 FWD or 25 AWD. Cycle: EPA gasoline mpg.
Who should consider it?
Ford documented a 2.5-liter full hybrid with 191 horsepower of combined system output, front-wheel drive and a PowerSplit electronic continuously variable transmission. The period U.S. combined EPA fuel-economy figure was 37 mpg. The 2.0-liter turbo gasoline version developed 250 horsepower with an eight-speed conventional automatic, and buyers could select AWD. The maximum tow figure reached 4,000 pounds only when the correct EcoBoost 4K Tow Package was specified rather than on a standard hybrid.
Ownership trade-offs and limitations
A small pickup makes sense for garden equipment, light weekend projects and owners who prefer a lower loading burden to a huge truck. The cabin accommodates passengers, but bed length and maximum payload are constrained compared with larger pickups. Inspect a used Maverick's hitch, actual door-jamb payload label, tires and trailer wiring instead of assuming every example supports published class-maximum claims. Highway noise, ride when unloaded and equipment offerings are best checked in the real vehicle.
Worthwhile alternatives
The Hyundai Santa Cruz has a related city-friendly pickup philosophy but a different design and powertrain emphasis. Ford's own Ranger is larger and more suited to harder work, while the F-150 is in a separate size class entirely. The Maverick is most persuasive as a multi-use compact utility vehicle, especially in hybrid form for those who prioritize efficiency over frequent substantial towing.
2022 identity and data caveats
The 191 horsepower for the hybrid is combined system output, not combustion-engine-alone power. The 4,000-pound towing maximum applies only with the specified powertrain and factory towing package.
