2022 Subaru Solterra: Specifications, Variants and Buying Guide
2022 Subaru Solterra — this record documents the JP calendar-2022 commercial introduction/sale-year configuration of the SUV. It does not assume a single worldwide drivetrain, certified range or equipment list.
What changed and why it matters
Subaru's Solterra launched in Japan in 2022 as a battery-electric SUV developed in close technical relationship with Toyota's bZ4X. It nevertheless merits a distinct consumer article because vehicle positioning, dealer network and published Subaru grades differ. The initial Japanese range included front-drive and all-wheel-drive equipment combinations, and Subaru provided different WLTC-certified range values by grade. The figures are not EPA results and must not be recast as real-world guarantees.
Powertrains, batteries and 2022 market specifications
- JP · ET-SS FWD — single-motor battery electric; FWD; single-speed. battery total kWh: 71.4; wltc range km: 567. Cycle: WLTC Japan.
- JP · ET-SS AWD — dual-motor battery electric; AWD; single-speed. battery total kWh: 71.4; wltc range km: 542. Cycle: WLTC Japan.
- JP · ET-HS AWD — dual-motor battery electric; AWD; single-speed. battery total kWh: 71.4; wltc range km: 487. Cycle: WLTC Japan.
Who should consider it?
The manufacturer lists a 71.4 kWh total battery capacity. On the original Japanese WLTC cycle the front-drive ET-SS was quoted at 567 km, the ET-SS AWD at 542 km and the more heavily equipped ET-HS AWD at 487 km. This spread illustrates why a buyer cannot multiply one range result across trims simply because battery total capacity appears the same. People seeking all-weather traction should assess the extra motors and equipment against expected charging frequency.
Ownership trade-offs and limitations
Subaru's brand association with all-wheel-drive capability should not lead anyone to imagine a battery SUV can complete remote off-road routes without energy planning. Range changes with speed, climate and tires, while charging depends on location and station compatibility. For used cars, verify installed assistance features, software, charge-port operation, battery checks and model-specific service campaigns. Manufacturer specifications do not establish independent reliability rankings.
Worthwhile alternatives
The Toyota bZ4X is the closest platform alternative and deserves a back-to-back comparison of seating, dealer support and local equipment. Nissan's Ariya offers a different styling and drivetrain mix, whereas a hybrid Subaru Forester may suit owners without dependable charging. The Solterra appeals where Subaru's local support and electric SUV form are important, not because one can assume identical ratings in every export market.
2022 identity and data caveats
Japanese period figures are WLTC Japan and the battery quantity is total (gross), never converted here to unproven usable capacity.
