2022 Toyota GR86: Specifications, Variants and Buying Guide
2022 Toyota GR86 — this record documents the US formal model-year configuration of the coupe. It does not assume a single worldwide drivetrain, certified range or equipment list.
What changed and why it matters
Toyota's second-generation GR86 launched for 2022 as a deliberately driver-oriented compact sports coupe with a larger naturally aspirated boxer engine. Its rear-wheel-drive chassis and two-plus-two seating are fundamentally different from the practical family-sedan market, and much of its appeal comes from the relatively simple way the driver interacts with it. A 2022 GR86 is therefore more than a cosmetic update of the preceding 86; the powertrain and chassis revision matter to performance and ownership expectations.
Powertrains, batteries and 2022 market specifications
- US · 6-speed manual — 2.4 L naturally aspirated horizontally opposed four-cylinder gasoline; RWD; 6-speed manual. engine displacement l: 2.4; engine output hp: 228; torque lb ft: 184; epa combined mpg: 22. Cycle: EPA gasoline mpg.
- US · 6-speed automatic — 2.4 L naturally aspirated horizontally opposed four-cylinder gasoline; RWD; 6-speed automatic. engine displacement l: 2.4; engine output hp: 228; torque lb ft: 184; epa combined mpg: 25. Cycle: EPA gasoline mpg.
Who should consider it?
The 2.4-liter horizontally opposed four-cylinder delivers 228 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque in U.S. specification. Toyota offered both a six-speed manual and a six-speed automatic. The manufacturer's period information cites EPA estimates of 22 mpg combined for the manual and 25 mpg combined for the automatic. Buyers should resist the temptation to transplant those values to a different country's emissions or fuel-economy scheme, even when the basic engine architecture is similar.
Ownership trade-offs and limitations
Its compact dimensions make parking easier than a large GT, and rear drive with a low seating position encourages an involved driving style. However, the rear seats are occasional-use places, luggage access is modest and low ride height can be inconvenient on poor roads. Maintenance deserves an enthusiast-car inspection: look for unapproved engine tuning, track-use wear, uneven tire condition and poorly repaired collision damage. None of those inspection priorities constitutes evidence of an official failure rate.
Worthwhile alternatives
The closely related Subaru BRZ shares much of the engineering while differing in brand positioning and some chassis tuning choices. A Mazda MX-5 is a smaller open-top two-seat experience, while a Volkswagen Golf GTI offers greater everyday hatchback practicality. Choose the GR86 when feedback, manageable dimensions and traditional rear-drive sports-car mechanics matter more than rear-seat space or fuel-economy leadership.
2022 identity and data caveats
The 2022 Toyota GR86 must not be confused with the older Toyota 86 or with the later limited editions and year-specific changes. All fuel-economy figures here are U.S. EPA estimates as presented by Toyota.
