2022 Volkswagen ID.5: Specifications, Variants and 2026 Used Buying Guide
2022 Volkswagen ID.5 belongs to the European electric coupe SUV segment. This research documents EU-market configuration(s) and separates 2022 commercial identity from equipment and certified-test claims in other countries.
2022 identity and market
Volkswagen’s ID.5 reached European buyers in 2022 as the coupe-roof counterpart to the more upright ID.4. Both share the MEB electric architecture, but the roofline changes access, cargo shape and the way buyers may use the rear seats. An ID.5 is not an ID.4 trim and should have its own body identity even though many drive components are related.
Engines, electrification and specifications
The period Volkswagen technical sheet lists a 77 kWh net battery in the Pro, Pro Performance and GTX forms. Original motor outputs range from 128 kW and 150 kW in rear-drive models to 220 kW combined in all-wheel-drive GTX. VW quoted up to 520 km WLTP on qualifying models; different tyres and equipment make that a model-specific maximum rather than a universal promise.
Practical appeal and limitations
The ID.5’s selling point is electric crossover practicality with a sleeker silhouette and quiet driving. The compromise can be rear headroom and the shape of bulky cargo, so measure the items actually being transported. The GTX offers more driven wheels and output but does not provide a greater energy capacity in the documented initial configuration, and consumes more energy in some conditions.
Used-owner inspection and servicing
When examining a used car, identify actual battery hardware and software version, check charging logs where available and verify factory options such as driver-assist packages. Do not assume today’s charging software or later-range revisions were installed in 2022. Wheel sizing, climate and regular motorway speed can reduce achievable distance compared with the WLTP certification.
Alternatives and buying decision
Compare the ID.5 with Škoda Enyaq Coupé for room and dealer access, and with a conventional ID.4 if a more functional tailgate shape matters. It fits drivers who prefer the styling and can charge dependably, while buyers prioritising easy rear headroom should sit in both body styles. Any US ID.4 specification should remain completely separate.
