What the 2023 vehicle actually was
BMW’s 2023 i4 eDrive35 uses the shape and door arrangement of a sporty Gran Coupe, not the tall packaging of a mainstream EV crossover. Its addition broadened the 2023 i4 line-up with a smaller usable battery and lower output than the higher grades. As a result, the model badge without an eDrive suffix is an insufficient description for a used advert.
BMW quotes 67 kWh net usable battery energy, a 281-hp rear electric motor and a 256-mile EPA range on the original standard 18-inch-wheel eDrive35. Its 180-kW maximum DC charging figure is a ceiling, not what a public charger delivers throughout a session. Check wheel fitment before transplanting that 256-mile number to another i4 grade.

Model-year distinction: For 2023 BMW added the more accessible i4 eDrive35 US grade; it is not interchangeable with the larger-battery i4 eDrive40 or dual-motor M50.
Strengths and ownership compromises
The driver-focused cabin and lower seating position may suit buyers transitioning from a petrol 3 Series more naturally than a high-riding EV. In exchange, the coupe-style roofline has different rear headroom and loading characteristics from a wagon or SUV. BMW operating-system features may require active subscriptions and should be tested rather than assumed.
Used buyer checks in 2026
Inspect the charging inlet, battery-management fault records, brakes and tyres, and document any manufacturer service actions by VIN. Check remaining high-voltage warranty and obtain a battery assessment if high mileage or irregular fast charging is reported. Equipment packages can substantially alter driver aids and comfort features.
Alternatives and who should consider it
A Hyundai Ioniq 5 offers very different interior packaging; the Kia EV6 is closer to a fastback crossover. If the brief is luxury EV driving feel with practical doors rather than maximum cargo volume, the eDrive35 makes sense as a distinct 2023 specification.
Factory specifications, test-cycle figures and original equipment are region- and grade-specific; verify the individual vehicle and official service eligibility using its VIN. This editorial is a buying framework, not a road test or an assertion of long-term failure rates.
