What changed or distinguishes 2023: China-market June 2023 launch with distinct pure-electric and range-extender variants.
The powertrain and its rating context
The Deepal S7 is a particularly important 2023 Chinese vehicle to identify correctly because it was sold with two fundamentally different propulsion ideas. The June 25 Chinese launch listed pure battery-electric 520 Max and 620 Max versions, alongside 121 Pro, 121 Max and 200 Max extended-range derivatives. Chinese reporting of launch information gave BEV battery capacities of 66.8 and 79.97 kWh, while the extended-range models used battery sizes of 18.99 or 31.73 kWh plus a petrol range extender. Describing all of these as “S7 EV 2023” erases the ownership difference.
Where this vehicle makes sense
The quoted 520-km and 620-km figures are China-market CLTC ratings, not verified motorway ranges and certainly not comparable directly with EPA figures from US electric crossovers. Equally, the range-extender's headline fuel-plus-electric distance is a manufacturer-era regulatory-style claim, not a promise from every charging and road scenario. Buyers must read the vehicle's engine and charging documentation before deciding whether running cost will resemble a BEV, a plug-in hybrid or a petrol car used without plugging in.
Practical compromises for 2026 shoppers
The S7 launched at a time when Chinese buyers had rapidly expanding choices of technology-rich, mid-size electric SUVs. Its appeal rests on an EV-first cabin and the ability to choose how much the owner depends on external charging. But infotainment language, telematics subscriptions, mapping, charging interfaces and regulatory compliance can present more difficulty in an unsupported export market than a raw battery-capacity comparison suggests. A 2026 importer must verify actual service network access.
Used-car inspection priorities
For used inspection, confirm whether the car is BEV or EREV from its build record and charge inlet, check manufacturer software and service history, look for traction-battery health evidence and assess range-extender servicing if fitted. Screen/camera function, crash repairs around battery housings and connector condition deserve careful professional attention. Do not project later Deepal S07 export specifications backwards: regional naming and homologation are separate claims.
Alternatives and model-year boundaries
A BYD Song Plus DM-i or equivalent plug-in SUV serves a different hybrid trade-off; a BYD Atto 3 BEV offers a more compact, internationally sold alternative. Compare CLTC only with CLTC or use a disclosed methodology; avoid invented real-world range.
