2023 Ford F-150 Lightning — Pickup Buyer’s Guide
Documented scope: MY2023; United States. Do not transplant this market’s specifications to another region.
2023 scope and confirmed powertrain
The 2023 electric F-150 Lightning is a dual-motor, four-wheel-drive pickup with standard-range and extended-range battery variants. Ford’s period technical table lists targeted peak powers of 452 horsepower for standard range and 580 horsepower for extended range, with a common targeted 775 lb-ft torque. These figures are not petrol F-150 specifications and must not be interchanged with later model-year software revisions.
What defines this 2023 vehicle
It uses a SuperCrew four-door body with a 5.5-foot bed and a front luggage compartment where a combustion engine would sit. Battery capacity, charge speed, power-export equipment and trailering capability vary by grade. A buyer should never take an advertised “maximum range” or charger figure as universal: battery option and test methodology belong in the same sentence.
Who should consider it
The Lightning is a very different purchase from a diesel or petrol work truck. Home depot charging can make daily commuting and local tasks straightforward, while repeated long-distance towing can require a radically different charging plan. Owners whose workday includes remote sites must check available grid connections and vehicle-to-load requirements in detail.
A particularly important buying distinction
The Lightning’s onboard electrical features may be central to a contractor’s reasons for buying, but the original option and compatibility details matter. A used truck that lacks the correct hardware cannot gain every advertised function merely through a software update. Matching the build record to charging and export-power needs is therefore more valuable than judging the dashboard design.
Checking a used example in 2026
On a used pickup, obtain a high-voltage system assessment, inspect charge-port and underbody battery protection and check bed damage from loads. Verify AC and DC charging performance, 12-volt electrical operation, software updates and the original options controlling onboard power export. VIN-specific recall eligibility must be checked in the country of registration.
Alternatives and the decision
Compare it with an ICE F-150 only after specifying annual distances, trailer duty and charging access. A smaller Maverick is easier to park but lacks the full-size bed and capability ambition; neither comparison can be made responsibly from a single headline EPA range number.
