2023 Hyundai Ioniq 5 — US Buyer’s Guide
Scope: MY2023 in US. These figures are not automatically transferable to other countries or trims.
What the 2023 vehicle actually was
The 2023 Ioniq 5 has a hatchback-like outline but unusual space between its axles, making it feel different from a typical small crossover. Its used value rests as much on the E-GMP charging ecosystem as on power output. The US manufacturer’s model-year page records different EPA figures for the Standard Range, long-range RWD and AWD, so the exact trim cannot be skipped.
The longer-range rear-drive SE, SEL and Limited were published at up to 303 EPA miles; AWD versions at 266, and Standard Range rear drive at 220. These are certified comparison figures, not a prediction for freeway travel in severe winter. Do not import the 2023 Australian 77.4-kWh WLTP range figures into a US listing.
Documented 2023 technical snapshot
| Year and market | 2023; US (MY2023) |
|---|---|
| Generation / lineage | E-GMP first-generation Ioniq 5 |
| Powertrain | 58-kWh standard-range or 77.4-kWh long-range pack in documented US line-up |
| Claimed output | 168 hp SE Standard Range RWD; 225 hp long-range RWD; 320 hp long-range AWD (US 2023) |
| Transmission and drive | Single-speed EV reduction gear; RWD or AWD |
| Consumption / range | 2023 US EPA range, grade-specific |
Model-year distinction: For 2023 the US Ioniq 5 continued with standard- and long-range battery layouts; long-range RWD and AWD had materially different EPA estimates.
Strengths and ownership compromises
The flat cabin floor and sliding, open-feeling interior favor families who value room rather than a conventional dashboard. Road-trip owners should establish that their regular motorway corridor has suitable high-power CCS stations. Efficient charging needs the right station, battery temperature and working hardware; a headline charging claim does not mean all chargers will deliver it.
Used buyer checks in 2026
Before purchasing, verify charging-system software and any VIN-linked updates, examine the AC and DC charge ports, and test accessories, seat controls and cabin electronics. Ask for actual charging and service documentation rather than assuming battery health from the odometer alone.
Alternatives and who should consider it
Against a Toyota bZ4X or Subaru Solterra the Ioniq 5 offers a different architecture and specification strategy. Compared with the Kia EV6, it is a packaging and ergonomic decision; always compare the same market, trim and tire-size range rating.
Factory specifications, test-cycle figures and original equipment are region- and grade-specific; verify the individual vehicle and official service eligibility using its VIN. This editorial is a buying framework, not a road test or an assertion of long-term failure rates.
