Mercedes-Benz E-Class (2023) — Sedan Buyer’s Guide
Scope: 2023 calendar-year regional sales, DE market; W214 sixth generation. Specifications vary by market, drivetrain and grade.
Evidence note: Manufacturer or type-approval figures are not independent road-test results. No vehicle-specific fault frequency, ownership costs or recall eligibility is inferred here.
Why this 2023 vehicle matters
Mercedes-Benz introduced the W214-generation E-Class sedan to the European market in 2023 as the successor to the W213. This is an especially important archive boundary: a used vehicle first registered in 2023 might be either generation, and the E-Class Estate is a separate body rather than a synonym for this saloon. The manufacturer announced European sales beginning in summer with deliveries arriving at dealers during the autumn.
Documented engine, battery and drivetrain options
The original European launch tables list the E 200 petrol mild hybrid at 150 kW, or 204 PS, with an additional 17-kW integrated starter-generator boost; the E 220 d diesel mild hybrid develops 145 kW, or 197 PS. Plug-in choices include the E 300 e with 230 kW combined system power and a 25.4-kWh specified high-voltage battery energy content. Mercedes gives its E 300 e a provisional 97–115 km weighted electric range under WLTP depending on configuration. That is a homologation figure, not a prediction for every used battery or winter journey.
Equipment, practicality and market trade-offs
The new electronics architecture is as significant as the engine update. Expanded MBUX entertainment, optional passenger display arrangements and digitally delivered services shift attention to software eligibility and subscriptions. Three of six initial European launch drivetrains were PHEVs, yet a photo of the dashboard cannot establish whether a car is mild hybrid or plug-in. Equipment also differs between conventional steel-spring suspension, optional AIRMATIC and rear-axle steering.
Checks for 2026 used-vehicle shoppers
For a 2026 second-hand buyer, inspect the original German build configuration and verify W214 identification, service continuity and current status of connected features. For the plug-in, confirm the included charge cable, charging-port condition, battery-related warranty applicability and ability to charge at home. Published weighted WLTP fuel consumption assumes a prescribed state of charge and should not be used as a normal fuel-only real-world number. Mechanical and software inspections should cover the actual options fitted.
Alternatives and buying verdict
BMW 5 Series G60 and the Audi A6 represent different executive-sedan trade-offs; both should be compared with matched body, propulsion and market specification. The W214 is attractive for its contemporary cabin and wider electrification choice, but buyers should not pay for optional functionality without demonstrating it works on that particular vehicle.
