MG Comet EV (2023) — Hatchback Buyer’s Guide
Scope: 2023 calendar-year regional sales, IN market; first-generation India Comet EV. Specifications vary by market, drivetrain and grade.
Evidence note: Manufacturer or type-approval figures are not independent road-test results. No vehicle-specific fault frequency, ownership costs or recall eligibility is inferred here.
Why this 2023 vehicle matters
MG’s 2023 Comet EV is a deliberate answer to Indian city congestion rather than a general-purpose long-range family crossover. Launched in April 2023, the very small battery-electric hatchback packages a cabin into a particularly short body. It is related to other SAIC-GM-Wuling micro-EV programs, but the Indian Comet name and specification must remain attached to its own homologated vehicle and launch context.
Documented engine, battery and drivetrain options
MG stated a 17.3-kWh lithium-ion battery and a manufacturer-quoted 230-km range under the market’s cited local test regime. The press release describes dual front airbags, a reversing camera, tyre-pressure monitoring and dual 10.25-inch screens among the equipment; the precise trim and availability must be checked separately. These are not numbers that can be substituted into a European WLTP or American EPA comparison.
Equipment, practicality and market trade-offs
The car’s strongest advantage is its ability to fit narrow streets and short parking spaces while running without tailpipe emissions. It is much less convincing for households that routinely use fast highways, carry bulky suitcases or cannot charge overnight. Small external dimensions do not tell the entire story: a prospective buyer should evaluate access, passenger needs and how the cabin functions with occupants aboard.
Checks for 2026 used-vehicle shoppers
A used 2023 Comet needs battery and charge-port checks, verification of the supplied charging equipment and awareness of actual connector compatibility. Inspect tyres, body repairs, air-conditioning and connected screen functions; urban cars often encounter repeated parking impacts. Published range is not guaranteed for a hot summer with air conditioning operating, and no unsupported claim about battery life should replace a diagnostic check. Its very short footprint is a benefit only if the buyer’s real routes suit a compact urban EV. Before purchase, test local charging availability, seating access and the size of luggage normally carried; promotional digital-cockpit features do not compensate for an unsuitable journey pattern.
Alternatives and buying verdict
Compare the Tata Tiago EV for a more conventional hatchback layout or a small petrol Alto K10 if reliable home charging is unavailable. The Comet is a rational second urban car for a narrow mission, not a cheap universal replacement for every combustion vehicle.
