2023 Toyota GR Supra — Coupe Buyer’s Guide
Documented scope: MY2023; United States. Do not transplant this market’s specifications to another region.
2023 scope and confirmed powertrain
The important MY2023 change is the arrival of a purpose-developed six-speed intelligent manual gearbox for the turbocharged 3.0-litre inline-six GR Supra. Toyota’s US release identifies 382 horsepower for the six-cylinder car. The 2.0-litre four-cylinder was a different offering and should not be described as having the same manual availability.
What defines this 2023 vehicle
Toyota also revised suspension and steering tuning on 3.0 models and offered a limited A91-MT derivative. The September 2022 sales release confirms the manual was actually arriving at US dealerships as a 2023 model; it was not merely a prototype announcement. A91-MT appearance and interior details need separate confirmation on any individual vehicle.
Who should consider it
Choosing between manual and automatic fundamentally changes this car’s appeal. The manual brings greater driver involvement on a winding road, while the automatic may be more agreeable in dense urban traffic. This is a low two-seat sports coupe rather than a substitute for a practical liftback; access, visibility, tyre prices and luggage shape deserve as much attention as the engine output.
A particularly important buying distinction
The MY2023 manual is the decisive historical marker: an otherwise near-identical earlier Supra 3.0 will not provide the same factory gearbox. A 2026 shopper should distinguish the normal manual 3.0 from the limited A91-MT and treat unusual colour, wheel or interior claims as VIN-verifiable information, not a reason to pay a premium without documentation.
Checking a used example in 2026
Examine the clutch operation, gear engagement when warm, underbody condition and evidence of track use without assuming that a track event automatically means abuse. Check whether a seller’s modifications affect emissions legality, insurance and remaining cover in the jurisdiction of registration. A stock-looking interior is not proof that mechanical tuning has never been changed.
Alternatives and the decision
The GR86 and BRZ provide lighter, less powerful alternatives with rear seats of limited utility; a used BMW Z4 offers a different open-top proposition. None is a like-for-like technical clone. For the 2023 Supra, transmission and six-cylinder trim are the key shopping filters before colour or special-edition scarcity.
