The long-wheelbase BMW 5 Series and i5 that went on sale in China in early 2024 are not identical body variants to the global G60 5 Series sedan. BMW developed and builds this G68 derivative specifically for the Chinese market, with an extended wheelbase and a focus on rear-seat passenger accommodation. This distinction matters for resale, parts catalogues and anyone considering an imported executive saloon.

Powertrains and market-specific specifications

BMW announced production at its Dadong plant in Shenyang and a January 2024 local market launch following the car’s appearance at Auto Guangzhou. BMW Brilliance’s period Chinese launch specifications identify a 530Li with 190 kW and 400 Nm and an electric i5 eDrive35L with 210 kW and 410 Nm. These exact manufacturer figures are for those China-market grades; they do not justify borrowing the different G60 sedan’s US equipment, 5 Series Touring data, or another i5 trim’s battery rating. The manufacturer material supports a separate long-wheelbase identity, not a change to the regular G60 model year.

Equipment, usability and model-year changes

The distinctive value is the rear compartment. A user frequently employing a chauffeur should sit behind their normal front-seat position and assess legroom, seat adjustment and controls. Equipment differs between locally supplied 5 Series and i5 models and between i5 and gasoline variants, so a globally published G60 brochure cannot verify a Chinese car's display, rear entertainment or driver-assistance set.

Used-buyer inspection and ownership trade-offs

Used-market checks include the local VIN build record, original registration, any imported-vehicle documents and evidence for manufacturer service support outside China. For an i5, battery and charging information must come from its actual China-spec data and connector configuration; Western-market charging assumptions are unsafe. The extra body length also changes parking and rear-wheel clearance requirements compared with a standard-wheelbase saloon.

Which buyers should consider it?

The G68 appeals to buyers who rate rear-seat accommodation above maximum agility or compact parking dimensions. A Mercedes-Benz E-Class long-wheelbase for China is a more appropriate direct comparison than a European E-Class estate. A shopper who drives themselves in a congested European city may prefer the regular G60, which is covered in a distinct model-year record.
