The BYD Seal U DM-i reached Europe in 2024 as a plug-in hybrid SUV. It is not the battery-electric BYD Seal saloon, despite a shared word in their names, and must not be confused with a Chinese Song Plus without checking local homologation. This distinction matters for second-hand buyers: the DM-i combines a combustion engine, traction battery and charging requirement, so ownership economics depend on how frequently its electric capability is actually used.
Powertrains, equipment and market specifications
BYD’s European introduction distinguishes Boost and Comfort front-wheel-drive models with a 1.5-litre hybrid engine and 18.3-kWh or 26.6-kWh Blade Battery respectively. The Design version combines a 1.5-litre turbo hybrid powertrain, front and rear electric motors, all-wheel drive and an 18.3-kWh pack. BYD quotes pure-electric range figures from 70 to 125 km depending on version and applicable test basis. It would be inaccurate to label every trim a 125-km vehicle or to transplant CLTC figures from a Chinese market model.
Checking a used example
Used-buyers should request the original trim identification and charge the car, ideally through the equipment available at home. Check the charging port and cables, look for a complete service record covering both electric and combustion components, and verify local access to diagnostics and software updates. Compare the cabin’s actual buttons, language support, infotainment features and parking aids with the sales claim. A PHEV driven mostly without charging is a very different proposition from one used for short electric commutes.
Who should buy it, and alternatives
The Seal U DM-i is well suited to a family that can charge routinely but still travels routes where refuelling is easier than relying entirely on fast chargers. Someone who never intends to plug in should compare ordinary full hybrids; someone with a stable charging routine and shorter annual travel may prefer a full BEV. Potential alternatives include the Toyota RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid and Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV where sold. Shop by verified local equipment and consumption standards, rather than assuming a shared model name implies identical motor output or usable range.
