The Omoda E5 was launched commercially in Malaysia in March 2024 as Chery’s electric crossover offering. It merits a separate record from the combustion-engine Omoda 5 because the electric drivetrain changes how the car is owned and researched, even if the exterior family resemblance is obvious. This article is based on Chery Malaysia’s release, not a conjectured global MY2024 trim sheet. Buyers importing the car should verify right-hand-drive equipment, charging standard and local dealer support rather than treating all Omoda-badged cars as identical.

Powertrains, equipment and market specifications

Chery’s Malaysian communications identify a lithium-iron-phosphate traction battery and claim up to 430 km of range, as well as a 30–80 percent charging interval in around 30 minutes under stated conditions. The accessible announcement does not establish a reliable common international test-cycle label for that 430-km figure; it is therefore deliberately not presented as EPA or WLTP. Nor does it establish the exact usable battery energy for all export markets. Check the original domestic sales specification before making like-for-like comparisons with other EVs.

Checking a used example

A used E5 inspection should include the charging cable, AC charging test, charging-port condition and any manufacturer battery and power-electronics warranty. Confirm software language, phone integration, connected-app activation and whether updates require a local importer. Examine tyres, body panel gaps and suspension condition, and obtain an independently documented vehicle history. In places without an authorised service route, even a fairly low-cost EV may become inconvenient; that ownership factor deserves as much attention as promotional range figures.

Who should buy it, and alternatives

The Omoda E5 suits buyers who want an electric crossover with everyday family proportions and have predictable charging access. It may be less appealing for drivers who often travel beyond the support and charging network. Compare the BYD Atto 3 and MG ZS EV sold in the relevant local market, being careful to align claimed driving-distance tests. Its Malaysian 2024 launch is verified, but a press release alone is not evidence of independently measured ride comfort, crash-test performance or multiyear reliability.
