Honda’s 2024 CR-V covers two different ways to own a mainstream compact SUV in the US: a conventional turbocharged petrol model and a two-motor full hybrid. It belongs to the sixth generation rather than being a 2024-only new design. For second-hand families, the practical questions concern grade-specific seating, all-wheel drive, boot arrangements and running costs rather than an imagined universal CR-V specification. These figures are taken from Honda’s US MY2024 features table; other markets have their own engine and hybrid lineups.
Powertrains, equipment and market specifications
The 1.5-litre turbo four-cylinder is rated at 190 horsepower in LX, EX and EX-L. Sport, Sport-L and Sport Touring use a 2.0-litre Atkinson-cycle petrol engine with an electric-drive system rated at 204 total system horsepower. The US EPA combined rating for a two-wheel-drive hybrid is listed as 40 mpg, while the hybrid with all-wheel drive is 37 mpg combined; exact economy and drivetrain combinations depend on the grade. Conventional gas versions use a CVT, while the hybrid has Honda’s two-motor drivetrain, so calling both powertrains simply ‘the same automatic’ is misleading.
Checking a used example
When viewing a used example, inspect cargo loading height, rear-seat space, child-seat fit and the actual vehicle’s infotainment interface. Determine whether blind-spot assistance, parking sensors and powered tailgate are fitted rather than reading a general model description as a guarantee. A dealer listing that says ‘Sport’ should be checked for the hybrid badges and vehicle documents because the sport-trim powertrain arrangement is important. Evaluate service history, tyre condition and open VIN-based service campaigns without asserting unknown fault frequencies.
Who should buy it, and alternatives
The CR-V hybrid is especially relevant to drivers who repeatedly use urban and suburban routes but cannot rely on plugging in. A petrol model can make sense when purchase cost or low annual mileage is more important than maximizing fuel efficiency. Toyota RAV4, Nissan Rogue and Hyundai Tucson are natural comparisons, but a buyer must compare specific market engines and years rather than copy a single American trim’s fuel-economy rating around the world. If sedan comfort is the priority, consider the related-size 2024 Accord instead of assuming an SUV is automatically a better fit.
