The third-generation Honda Freed began Japanese sales in June 2024 and addresses a problem many Western-market vehicle lists overlook: combining a short, easy-to-place footprint with useful people-carrying packaging. It is a compact MPV rather than a fashionable SUV, and the buyer benefit lies in access, versatile seating and modest outer dimensions. Because Honda’s launch identifies it as a Japan-market introduction, this entry uses calendar-year 2024 rather than inventing a global MY2024 grade range.
Powertrains, equipment and market specifications
Honda offered the new Freed with a 1.5-litre gasoline engine and CVT as well as the two-motor e:HEV hybrid, which was new to the Freed range. The company highlights the AIR and CROSSTAR design directions and packaging refinements while retaining compact exterior proportions. Its published launch material describes the engineering changes but is not authority to assign US EPA economy, European safety ratings or an overseas trim to a Japanese domestic car. Only a market-correct specification and build document can resolve those details.
Checking a used example
For a 2024 Freed being resold or exported, confirm the powertrain and seating arrangement first. Inspect sliding-door operation, access to the rear seats, low-speed manoeuvrability and room for real luggage with passengers on board. Japanese navigation, radio bands and connected services may not behave the same way in another country; import duties, registration and spare-parts distribution can overwhelm a tempting price. Request maintenance records in a form that can be understood and look for any unresolved manufacturer service action.
Who should buy it, and alternatives
The Freed is worth researching for a household whose daily trips are mainly urban but who still needs multiple passengers or child seats. It will not suit someone demanding high motorway performance or heavy towing. Compare it with the Toyota Sienta and locally available compact MPVs rather than automatically placing it against large SUVs. Unlike a full-size minivan, its packaging is designed around compactness; that makes test-fitting the family’s actual passengers and luggage essential before purchase.
