VEHICLE OVERVIEWMotorRift

The American 2024 Honda Pilot is a practical three-row SUV from the fourth generation introduced for the 2023 model year. Its used-shopping appeal is not based on a claim that every Pilot is rugged: the road-biased EX-L and Touring have different priorities from the TrailSport with its more adventure-focused configuration. Family buyers should measure second-row access and third-row legroom with their usual passengers, rather than relying on the nominal seating count. The US model-year specification does not define Pilot equivalents sold in unrelated international markets.

Verified powertrains and equipment

Honda’s 2024 specifications give the direct-injection 3.5-litre V6 285 SAE horsepower and 262 lb-ft, paired with a ten-speed automatic transmission. Depending on grade, the Pilot seats seven or eight and offers front-wheel or i-VTM4 all-wheel drive. Honda quotes up to 3,500 lb towing for relevant 2WD and up to 5,000 lb for suitable AWD configurations; neither figure is a universal owner permission. The TrailSport is AWD and has its own wheel, tyre and equipment choices. Economy ratings also differ by drivetrain and grade, so a single combined mpg is deliberately not applied across the range.

What to check before buying used

A used Pilot deserves a family-focused inspection: fold and reposition the seats repeatedly, check second-row releases and child-seat fittings, assess rear ventilation and verify the camera system and power tailgate. If it has been used for towing, look at wiring, hitch and service records and calculate real payload with everyone aboard. Compare ride quality on the tyres actually installed, particularly if a TrailSport has been modified. Recalls and campaigns should be checked by VIN against Honda’s current systems, not inferred from an internet reliability ranking.

Best fit, compromises and competitors

For buyers who regularly need a third row but do not want a full-size body-on-frame SUV, a well-chosen Pilot can be a strong match. It is less appealing for someone who wants hybrid fuel economy or mostly drives and parks alone in a dense city. Compare the Toyota Grand Highlander, Kia Telluride, Hyundai Palisade and Mazda CX-90 on cabin packaging and engine choices rather than making broad claims about durability. A seven-seat TrailSport cannot automatically replace an eight-seat Pilot in a family’s practical plan.
