Identity and model-year context
The American 2024 Tucson is a pre-facelift example of the NX4 generation, despite some markets receiving different 2024 updates on another timetable. It remains a conventional compact family SUV but is sold with substantially different gasoline, hybrid and plug-in hybrid drivetrains. The model-year change worth noticing is the N Line trim’s move to the 1.6-litre turbo hybrid AWD powertrain in the US, rather than retaining the previous gasoline-only setup. Therefore a seller describing every 2024 N Line as a 2.5-litre car is conflating model years.
Powertrain and market details
Hyundai’s US technical documentation specifies a 2.5-litre four-cylinder for conventional gasoline versions, rated at 187 hp, with an eight-speed automatic and front- or all-wheel drive depending on grade. The hybrid and plug-in variants use a 1.6-litre turbo gasoline engine alongside electric drive, with different combined outputs and battery capability. Their six-speed automatics are not the same powertrain as the 2.5-litre model. This makes an isolated fuel-economy figure essentially meaningless unless drivetrain, wheel choice and EPA test category are clearly identified. European diesel figures, where applicable, do not describe the US 2024 Tucson.
Used buying: equipment and practicality
The strongest case for the gas-only car is straightforward ownership without external charging equipment; a full hybrid rewards buyers whose daily use includes regular urban traffic. A plug-in hybrid only makes operational sense after checking where it will actually be charged, whether the vehicle is in its original market and what its battery warranty terms provide. The family-sized rear seat and cargo area are shared priorities, but their packaging and available equipment should be inspected in person, especially if a space-saving spare tyre or cargo underfloor arrangement is important. Ask for maintenance and service-campaign history.
Who it suits, limitations and alternatives
On a used example verify whether it is an HEV, PHEV or gasoline vehicle before negotiating, and document whether its AWD system is factory-fitted. A family focused on value should also drive a comparably configured Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4 or Kia Sportage instead of assuming all compact hybrids behave alike. The 2025 US Tucson facelift brought further visual and interface changes, so do not use a later digital-cockpit image as proof of a 2024 car’s equipment. No unverified safety score, field-failure incidence or real-world economy is claimed.
