VEHICLE OVERVIEWMotorRift

Isuzu introduced the facelifted Australian D-MAX range to dealers from 1 May 2024. Unlike a completely new pickup generation, this was a substantial visual, cabin and equipment update to the existing model family. The year distinction matters because earlier third-generation examples can have different cameras, infotainment displays and driver assistance settings. A 2024 Australian D-MAX should also not automatically inherit the engines or emissions specifications of a similarly named truck sold in Thailand, South Africa or another market. Cab, drivetrain and body configuration are essential parts of its identity.

Powertrain and 2024 market specification

The local 24MY documentation describes a 1.9-litre RZ4E-TC turbodiesel rated at 110 kW and 350 Nm and a 3.0-litre 4JJ3-TCX turbodiesel rated at 140 kW and 450 Nm. These pair with six-speed manual or automatic transmissions depending on grade and 4×2 or 4×4 configuration. Isuzu introduced new or revised digital reversing camera, stereo-camera assistance technology and selected displays. The manufacturer explicitly differentiates towing and payload by engine, cab and gearbox, so a universal “3.5-tonne” claim must not be applied without checking the exact model documentation.

What to examine on a used example

For a second-hand work ute, verify the exact grade, cab type, GVM and tow ratings from its compliance information. Check whether the vehicle has been used to tow or haul near its limits and inspect the underbody, towbar, tray mountings, suspension and recovery points accordingly. Use original service records for diesel maintenance and assess the gearbox and 4×4 engagement on an appropriate surface. Trial the updated camera and safety-assistance functions without disabling or overriding them. Aftermarket accessories can change clearance, vehicle mass and warranty questions; a professional inspection remains sensible.

Buyer fit, limitations and alternatives

D-MAX is appealing when documented payload or towing usefulness and dealer support matter as much as family comfort. Cross-shopping should include the Australian-spec Ford Ranger, Mitsubishi Triton and Toyota HiLux, with equivalent cab and engine versions. A high-output or top-trim description should not substitute for a verified towing plate and actual legal load capacity. The 2024 facelift may justify a premium over older examples for its equipment, but the value depends on working history, servicing, local emissions rules and the true condition of the individual pickup.
