Context and model-year identity

Mahindra’s Thar ROXX was launched in India in August 2024 as a five-door family-oriented off-road SUV, not merely a standard three-door Thar with longer rear doors. The separate M_GLYDE architecture, altered suspension tuning and interior packaging make it a genuinely different shopping decision. Mahindra’s press releases document bookings from early October and deliveries beginning that month, which anchors this as an actual 2024 Indian sale-year vehicle. It should not be labelled a 2024 US model or conflated with export-market Thar variants whose engines, emissions equipment and trims may differ.

2024 powertrain and market specifications

The documented 2024 range contains a 2.0-litre mStallion TGDi petrol engine and 2.2-litre mHawk diesel; six-speed manual and six-speed torque-converter automatic configurations appear in the model family. Mahindra specifies up to 130 kW and 380 Nm for a petrol version and up to 128.6 kW and 370 Nm for a higher-output diesel version, but lower-output trims and 4×4 configurations have their own figures. The rear-drive or 4×4 arrangement must be checked on the actual trim. Driver-assistance hardware, differential locking and infotainment options likewise differ by variant rather than being universal.

What to inspect on a used vehicle

As a used buy, the ROXX is unusually attractive if a family needs meaningful rear-door access while keeping low-range off-road ability in the right version. Examine doors and hinges, suspension bushings, underside protection and tyres for the consequences of enthusiastic trail use. Ask whether aftermarket accessories have changed electrical loads, weight or suspension geometry. Testing motorway stability and low-speed manoeuvrability matters because a tall off-road-oriented vehicle feels different from an urban monocoque SUV. For vehicles with 4×4, confirm how the driver selects it and that the system operates under the manufacturer’s required conditions.

Who it suits and alternative choices

Someone who mainly drives to school, work and supermarkets may get more cabin usability and lower running effort from a Mahindra XUV700 or a mainstream crossover. The ROXX’s case becomes stronger where unpaved roads, deep ruts and occasional towing are genuinely part of life. Compare genuine seating comfort rather than using an off-road marketing claim as a proxy for ride quality. Any Bharat NCAP rating must be tied to its test date and specification; a launch-time statement that a vehicle was engineered for a rating is not itself an independent crash-test result.
