For 2024 the US-built CX-50 receives suspension and steering revisions that can matter more to day-to-day use than its familiar exterior. Mazda adjusted the dampers and recalibrated electric power steering, with specified changes arriving from November production. Therefore a used buyer comparing early- and late-produced 2024 vehicles should not automatically assume every example has identical chassis tuning.

Powertrains and market-specific specifications

The 2.5 S models use a naturally aspirated four-cylinder rated at 187 hp and 186 lb-ft; the turbo makes 256 hp and 320 lb-ft on 93-octane gasoline, or 227 hp and 310 lb-ft on regular 87-octane. Mazda pairs both with a six-speed automatic and standard i-Activ all-wheel drive in the US. Available drive modes and towing allowances differ: the release identifies up to 3,500 lb for appropriately equipped turbo versions, not a universal CX-50 towing figure.

Equipment, usability and model-year changes

The CX-50's broad stance, protective body cladding and accessory potential suggest outdoor utility, but real ownership should be assessed through the condition of roof mounts, tyres, wheel rims and lower body. Some 2024 packages add wireless charging and upgraded comfort equipment. A car sold with off-road-looking wheels may have a harsher ride or be less suited to daily commuting than a less embellished 2.5 S.

Used-buyer inspection and ownership trade-offs

A thorough used inspection includes checking the underside for dirt-related damage, confirming compatible tyre sizing on AWD vehicles, and recording which factory damping/steering configuration applies to its production date. Obtain maintenance history and validate accessories, especially anything rated to tow or carry roof loads. Verify any recalled components by VIN, and resist assumptions that every used CX-50 had serious off-road use.

Which buyers should consider it?

The CX-50 is most persuasive to buyers wanting a Mazda crossover with an outdoor-oriented shape and useful standard AWD. Mazda's CX-5 offers a less adventure-styled alternative; Subaru Forester and Toyota RAV4 offer different packaging or hybrid priorities. Choose on driving route, cargo shape and local operating costs, not on unproven long-term reliability claims for a relatively young generation.
