Mazda’s 2024 CX-90 is a fresh US-market three-row SUV on the manufacturer’s longitudinal-engine, rear-biased large-vehicle architecture. It is not a restyled CX-9, and it offers a buyer an unusual choice of a turbocharged inline-six mild hybrid or a four-cylinder plug-in hybrid. Mazda designated it a 2024 model even though the debut and advance announcements were made in 2023. Anyone shopping in 2026 should start with the exact original powertrain label because these versions have quite different fuelling, charging and service needs.

Powertrains, equipment and market specifications

Mazda’s original US announcement identifies a 3.3-litre turbo inline-six in the high-output Turbo S, with up to 340 horsepower and 369 lb-ft when using the recommended premium gasoline. Another version of the same engine family has a lower output; therefore the 340-horsepower number cannot be attached to every six-cylinder CX-90. The plug-in variant combines a 2.5-litre four-cylinder with electric drive and a manufacturer-listed 17.8 kWh battery, with up to 323 horsepower in the cited press briefing. All three launch powertrain groups are paired with an eight-speed automatic, but their operation and fuel economy are not identical.

Checking a used example

Used-car checks should focus on the practical configuration: three-row seat space, ease of entry to the third row, cargo room with the seats erected, and whether the vehicle can tow the owner’s intended trailer at its particular rating. PHEV buyers should confirm charge-port condition, charging equipment and the difference between a charged-battery test and petrol-only operation. Ask for service records and check VIN-specific recall or software campaigns rather than borrowing reliability predictions from other Mazda models or treating a launch press drive as evidence of long-term durability.

Who should buy it, and alternatives

The CX-90 suits a household that wants three rows but prefers the packaging and driving position of a conventional SUV to a minivan. The high-output six-cylinder appeals to someone valuing a strong gasoline engine; the PHEV is better suited to owners able to charge routinely and exploit shorter electric trips. Compare the Toyota Grand Highlander, Honda Pilot or Kia Telluride against the same purchase budget and real passenger requirements. Its central trade-off is complexity and purchase fit across its multiple electrified powertrains, not a single universal notion of ‘CX-90 performance’.
