Context and model-year identity
The 2024 Crosstrek is the third generation of Subaru’s compact all-wheel-drive crossover in the United States. It makes sense to study it as a smaller vehicle than an Outback, rather than choosing between them solely by an AWD badge. The redesign brought an updated cabin and body, but the engine decision remained linked closely to trim. A shopper moving from an earlier Crosstrek should also check that the 2024 car uses Subaru’s continuously variable automatic gearbox in the US; a manual transmission remembered from an older generation is not evidence of a 2024 manual option.
2024 powertrain and market specifications
The factory 2024 brochure separates the 2.0-litre boxer four in Base and Premium grades from the 2.5-litre boxer four in Sport and Limited grades. Subaru quotes 152 hp and 145 lb-ft for the 2.0, versus 182 hp and 178 lb-ft for the 2.5. All of those grades have standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive and Lineartronic CVT. The brochure records 29 mpg EPA combined for the relevant four core trims, while the Wilderness version requires separate fuel economy and tyre consideration. This is US documentation; another country may have a hybrid or different local engine.
What to inspect on a used vehicle
The 2.0-litre car can be sufficient for gentle urban and suburban travel, but a frequent mountain-road driver carrying passengers should sample the 2.5-litre variant rather than relying on identical exterior dimensions. On used vehicles check tyre matching across all four wheels and look for evidence of unsuitable off-road use; uneven diameters are particularly relevant to an AWD drivetrain. Assess bumper and underbody condition, the boot’s usable size, and how the suspension behaves on broken surfaces. Confirm EyeSight and infotainment equipment for the exact grade, including any features added through packages.
Who it suits and alternative choices
A Crosstrek is strongest for buyers who value compact parking dimensions, decent visibility and poor-weather confidence without needing a large SUV. The Subaru Impreza hatchback provides a closely related alternative for someone who seldom uses the extra ride height; a Toyota Corolla Cross offers a different packaging approach. If the car is intended for serious hauling or repeated motorway trips with heavy loads, compare an Outback or another larger wagon. Owner reports or general SUV rankings cannot substitute for a documented inspection of the actual car.
