Suzuki’s Japanese Swift crossover into calendar 2024 is an all-new small hatch generation that went on sale with the CVT in December 2023 and the five-speed manual mild hybrid on January 17, 2024. It should not be combined mechanically with the independently developed Indian-market Maruti Suzuki Swift sold later in 2024 without checking the local brochure. For an enthusiast, the manual mild hybrid is a notable choice; for city commuters, the CVT configuration may be easier to live with. Buying one requires a clear model code, drivetrain and Japan-specific grade.

Verified powertrains and equipment

The Japanese manufacturer launch documents a newly developed 1.2-litre Z12E gasoline engine, a redesigned CVT and optional mild hybrid assistance. The XG 2WD CVT has a published Japanese WLTC combined value of 23.4 km/L, while the Hybrid MX 2WD five-speed manual is listed at 25.4 km/L under the same Japanese testing regime. These are grade- and transmission-specific certification values, not a European WLTP estimate or proof of real-world economy. Four-wheel drive exists in selected CVT versions, and the manual is not automatically offered with every grade.

What to check before buying used

The compact Swift should be evaluated from the driver’s seat: check clutch action if considering the manual and judge the low-speed CVT response if choosing an automatic. See whether the optional nine-inch connectivity display and local assistance functions are installed on the particular trim. The short body is easy to park, but inspect how rear doors open and whether your luggage fits under the parcel shelf. A used imported Swift may have a Japanese-language multimedia unit, navigation licensing and lighting that are inconvenient to convert.

Best fit, compromises and competitors

This Swift works for a driver seeking a light, efficient-feeling urban car with more engagement than many automatic-only city hatchbacks. The compromise is modest rear-seat and cargo capacity. Compare a Japanese Toyota Yaris or Honda Fit, and avoid assuming that a similarly named Swift Sport or Indian variant shares the Z12E hybrid powertrain. Battery assistance here is mild hybrid technology, not a plug-in system; there is no external charging requirement and no unverified 2026 battery-longevity assertion.
