Australia’s 2024 Toyota HiLux update is an important case where a refreshed pickup is not an entirely new generation. Toyota introduced 48-volt V-Active electrical assistance on selected four-wheel-drive automatic double-cab versions and revised the nose and equipment elsewhere in the range. The mild-hybrid-style system is not an externally rechargeable PHEV and should not be confused with the Hilux BEV prototypes reported separately. Many work-focused HiLux variants continued without V-Active, so an advertisement stating simply “2024 HiLux hybrid” needs checking against grade, cab style and build date.

Verified powertrains and equipment

Toyota Australia introduced V-Active from March 2024 for defined SR, SR5 and Rogue 4×4 double-cab automatic models. It adds a 48V motor-generator, compact battery and stop-start functionality alongside the established 2.8-litre turbodiesel, which Toyota rates at 150 kW and 500 Nm in qualifying versions. The manufacturer described improved consumption relative to older comparable grades, but this is a company laboratory comparison rather than a universal certified real-world reduction. Other 2024 Hilux versions retained 2.4-litre diesel or petrol options, different transmissions and different load ratings.

What to check before buying used

A used pickup warrants an inspection of load history before any judgement about the powertrain. Look at the bed, chassis rails, towing equipment, suspension modifications, water-crossing signs and tyres. On V-Active, ensure the 48V-related service schedule and owner documentation are present and that a qualified workshop assesses any fault warning; do not attempt to open electrical components. Compare original load labels because a heavy accessory canopy, tow bar or suspension kit changes the practical legal capacity. Test Multi-Terrain Select on the correct grade only within safe conditions.

Best fit, compromises and competitors

This HiLux is a logical shortlist candidate for Australian owners who need a utility bed and known local dealer coverage, but overkill for a small-city commuter. Drivers who rarely venture beyond paved roads might not benefit from paying extra for a 4×4 V-Active grade. Compare the Ford Ranger, Isuzu D-Max and Mitsubishi Triton on exact 2024 Australian towing, payload, emissions and tyre setups. Do not use US Tacoma specifications, later Australian HiLux generations or overseas hybrid branding to infer the hardware of this model.
