Identity and model-year context
Toyota’s Proace City is the compact workhorse within its UK professional van range, distinct from the longer medium-duty Proace and from Proace City Verso passenger models. For 2024 it adopted the updated Toyota Professional family front styling and substantial cabin changes, so it should be assessed as a refreshed existing van rather than an unrelated new model. UK manufacturer information describes both medium and long body arrangements, with standard Smart Cargo equipment intended to help transport awkward long objects. This is a small commercial van purchase where the real load shape is often more important than the maximum headline volume.
Powertrain and market details
At launch the core diesel was Toyota’s 1.5-litre unit in a 101 bhp version with six-speed manual gearbox. Sport specification could use a higher-output 129 bhp version paired with either six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic according to variant. Toyota quoted up to 4.4 cubic metres of space for qualifying long-bodied configurations and braked towing up to 1.2 tonnes, but a buyer must refer to the actual weight plate, tyre and towing approval for the chosen vehicle. Battery-electric versions form part of the wider 2024 range; their charging behavior and payload are not interchangeable with diesel specifications.
Used buying: equipment and practicality
A used City should be inspected as a tool rather than simply as a low-mileage vehicle. Measure access to the loading aperture and confirm that the Smart Cargo through-load mechanism and bulkhead are intact. Loading marks, sliding-door damage, damaged floor coverings and suspension wear may matter even when the cabin looks tidy. The long variant may deliver useful capacity at the cost of easier parking. Check the service file against the actual powertrain, verify any commercial warranty transfer rules and examine emissions-system warnings through a qualified shop if buying diesel. Do not assume all grades have the same screen or automatic gearbox.
Who it suits, limitations and alternatives
Proace City suits local trades, small deliveries and operators who need a compact vehicle capable of accepting two Euro pallets in Toyota’s documented configurations. A larger Proace is more sensible if large tools, crew transport or sustained heavy loads dominate. Peugeot Partner, Citroën Berlingo Van and Opel/Vauxhall Combo Cargo can serve as alternative shopping comparisons, though matching components by appearance alone is unsafe. Where urban restrictions favor electric drive, calculate usable range and downtime for the actual van rather than borrowing the City Verso’s family-vehicle range estimate. Its 2024 UK specifications must not be generalized to all countries.
