BYD Atto 2 DM-i 2026: Active vs Boost PHEV
Market scope: GB. Year basis: documented 2026 commercial sale / update.
What is different about this model?
The Atto 2 DM-i is a plug-in hybrid compact SUV, not the fully electric Atto 2 fitted with an entirely different drivetrain. BYD opened UK orders in June 2026 and issued local specifications ahead of scheduled August deliveries. That provides a dated commercial market record for 2026. The two grades, Active and Boost, look related in photographs but differ markedly in usable electric commuting potential and equipment. Treat the combination of a petrol tank and a plug as the defining ownership compromise.
Powertrain and verified specifications
The Active couples a 1.5-litre petrol engine with an electrically assisted DM-i drivetrain, a 7.8 kWh Blade Battery and a 24-mile WLTP electric-only figure. Boost increases the pack to 18 kWh and the rated electric distance to 55 miles, while quoted system output rises from 165 to 212 PS in the UK technical release. Both drive the front wheels. These electric-only results must not be confused with total fuel-plus-electric range, which uses a completely different measure.
Which version makes sense?
An owner able to charge at home and complete most commutes electrically has a stronger rationale for Boost. Someone unable to plug in regularly should question whether a PHEV's greater complexity and purchase cost is worthwhile compared with a conventional hybrid. Active may suit journeys with short electric legs, but a 24-mile laboratory figure should not be interpreted as 24 miles in every winter commute. Equipment differences, including cabin comfort features, also matter when comparing actual UK offers.
Ownership and used-car considerations
When considering a nearly new example, check that both the petrol system and high-voltage charging work normally, request a full service history and test charging with the correct connector. State-of-charge at handover can profoundly influence test-drive fuel consumption. BYD's combined-range publicity is not an independently measured ownership cost analysis. The Atto 2 EV is a separate powertrain research intent and should not inherit any DM-i fuel or battery figures from this article.
