2023 BYD Seal — Sedan Buyer’s Guide
Scope: 2023 documented regional sale year; EU market evidence. Other markets may differ.
Specification note: Ratings and measurements apply only to the cited market, model and variant. Manufacturer claims are not independent road-test measurements.
Why the 2023 version matters
The BYD Seal became a serious European electric sedan contender in 2023, with BYD documenting first customer deliveries from November. Its technical character differs from the Dolphin even though both use the manufacturer's EV family: the Seal incorporates Cell-to-Body battery integration and a larger, lower sedan layout. The European record should not be confused with a China-market Seal, where battery, trim naming and homologation can differ.
Confirmed 2023 specifications
BYD's April 2023 European information identified an 82-kWh battery and WLTP combined range of up to 570 km for the rear-drive configuration and 520 km for all-wheel drive. Later European press details noted standard 11-kW AC and 150-kW DC charging capability. These are manufacturer and test-cycle specifications, not independently verified charging-curve measurements. The motor layout is a real purchase distinction: choose between the drivetrain's performance benefits and the more efficient rear-drive range figure.
Strengths, compromises and intended buyer
A Seal makes sense for a driver who likes a conventional sporty-sedan shape but wants an electric platform. Yet it does not become a large practical hatch merely because its rear seats are roomy; luggage opening and access deserve a hands-on test. BYD's extensive driver-assistance and cabin equipment descriptions should be read against the actual Design or Excellence-AWD grade, the original destination country and software version, not treated as universal for every Seal ever sold.
What to inspect before buying used
For a used 2023 car, confirm which market issued the type approval, the actual battery and axle configuration, and whether the charging inlet matches the public infrastructure you plan to use. Request maintenance and collision history, inspect the underbody and battery enclosure visually with a professional, and review battery warranty conditions. Seller-reported range, a dashboard prediction and a WLTP number answer three different questions and should not be conflated.
Alternatives and the verdict
Compare the Seal against the Tesla Model 3, Hyundai IONIQ 6 and Polestar 2 according to your priorities for charging network, service network, rear-seat packaging and software. The AWD range must not be replaced by the higher rear-drive WLTP claim. Equally, the Seal U is a later, differently bodied SUV line, not another trim of this 2023 sedan.
