2023 Hyundai IONIQ 6 — Sedan Buyer’s Guide
Scope: 2023 model year; US market evidence. Other markets may differ.
Specification note: Ratings and measurements apply only to the cited market, model and variant. Manufacturer claims are not independent road-test measurements.
Why the 2023 version matters
The 2023 US IONIQ 6 makes a useful case study in why an EV model name alone never tells a buyer its range. Hyundai's aerodynamic E-GMP electric sedan arrived with multiple drivetrains and wheel sizes, and the official EPA estimates span a much wider band than a single headline figure suggests. This record is for the US model year, not the European WLTP-certified range matrix.
Confirmed 2023 specifications
Hyundai published 361 miles of EPA-estimated range for the SE Long Range rear-wheel-drive car on 18-inch wheels. The SE Long Range all-wheel-drive version on the same wheel size was rated at 316 miles. Move to the SEL or Limited with 20-inch wheels and the cited estimates fall to 305 miles for rear-drive and 270 miles for all-wheel drive. Those figures are configuration-specific regulatory estimates, not distances recorded by this site in testing.
Strengths, compromises and intended buyer
The lower, flowing sedan body will appeal to drivers who prefer a road car over an SUV, while the electric platform's fast-charging architecture is a strong reason to compare it with other long-distance EVs. But packaging must be experienced, not assumed: the rear seat, trunk opening, outward visibility and dashboard controls have different priorities from an IONIQ 5. Hyundai notes that digital side mirrors shown in some markets were not available on US cars.
What to inspect before buying used
When shopping in 2026, obtain the trim, driven axle, factory wheel size and battery information from the original window sticker or dealer records. Assess charging capability on an appropriate charger and inspect the charge port and tyre condition. An owner's winter range log cannot be substituted for an EPA test result. Check the VIN for open recalls or campaigns and ask about the remaining battery and vehicle warranty terms in the country of first registration.
Alternatives and the verdict
The SE Long Range RWD is the one to investigate if rated efficiency is the priority; AWD and larger wheels merit their own price-versus-range calculation. Compare the Tesla Model 3 for charging and software preferences, and the Hyundai IONIQ 5 or Kia EV6 for a more upright cabin. There is no defensible reason to advertise every 2023 IONIQ 6 as a 361-mile car.
