2023 MG MG4 EV — Hatchback Buyer’s Guide
Scope: 2023 documented regional sale year; UK market evidence. Other markets may differ.
Specification note: Ratings and measurements apply only to the cited market, model and variant. Manufacturer claims are not independent road-test measurements.
Why the 2023 version matters
By 2023, the UK MG4 EV was already more than its initial entry-level specification. The rear-drive compact hatch gained a high-performance XPOWER and a larger-battery Extended Range, making an apparently simple used-car search surprisingly variant-sensitive. This article covers the UK 2023 sales-year family in one place: the very different drivetrain options should remain nested rather than generating misleading country or grade duplicates.
Confirmed 2023 specifications
MG's UK range announcement tabulated 51-kWh Standard Range, 64-kWh Long Range and 77-kWh Extended Range batteries, described as nominal capacities. Published WLTP combined ranges in that document include 218, 281 and 323 miles for the corresponding SE Standard, SE Long and Trophy Extended variants. The 2023 XPOWER adds two motors, four-wheel drive and 320 kW/435 PS. Its published 239-mile WLTP rating is not interchangeable with the rear-drive Long Range figure.
Strengths, compromises and intended buyer
This breadth is the MG4's appeal and its buying trap. A budget daily driver may be perfectly served by the 51-kWh car, while motorway-heavy users can justify asking whether the Extended Range's larger battery is worth the asking price. XPOWER is a different performance purchase with its own tyre, suspension and energy-use priorities. MG's published acceleration and charging claims describe specified launch conditions; they are not first-hand measurements by this archive.
What to inspect before buying used
Look at the original UK grade and wheel size, battery model, charging equipment, service documentation and software status. Confirm the conditions for any remaining manufacturer warranty and examine underbody repairs and tyre wear. Where a classified ad says simply 'MG4 2023', asking for its battery size and driven axles should come before comparing ranges. Later software updates or changes to standard equipment must not be silently retrofitted to launch-car descriptions.
Alternatives and the verdict
The MG4 makes sense for buyers who want a familiar hatchback layout with an EV drivetrain and several budgets represented. Cross-shop the BYD Dolphin for compact-family use, the Volkswagen ID.3 for a similar European EV shape, and a Kia Niro EV where a taller cabin appeals. Do not advertise the XPOWER, Standard Range and Extended Range as having identical practical range or charging behavior.
