2023 Peugeot 408 — Fastback Buyer’s Guide
Scope: 2023 documented regional sale year; UK market evidence. Other markets may differ.
Specification note: Ratings and measurements apply only to the cited market, model and variant. Manufacturer claims are not independent road-test measurements.
Why the 2023 version matters
Peugeot's European 408 fastback reached initial UK customer delivery in the first quarter of 2023, a valuable distinction from the unrelated Chinese-market 408 sedan. The European body blends a long roofline and raised stance with a distinctly fastback rear, rather than behaving like a traditional three-box saloon. A global registry should therefore keep the P54 European fastback separate from the China-market Peugeot 408 identity.
Confirmed 2023 specifications
The original Stellantis UK order announcement records a 4.69-meter length, approximately 1.48-meter height and 2.79-meter wheelbase. Its launch range included plug-in hybrid choices alongside conventional petrol alternatives, but exact battery capacity, electric range and motor output must be attached to the respective original UK powertrain brochure. The plug-in and petrol cars are not numerically interchangeable simply because their badge and exterior body are the same.
Strengths, compromises and intended buyer
The 408's appeal lies in uncommon styling, generous road-car proportions and the option of PHEV motoring for people with access to regular charging. However, the elongated fastback body changes rear visibility and loading geometry, so larger objects and children's seats should be tried rather than judged from pictures. A PHEV buyer should investigate daily electric-route length and charging provision; a driver unable to plug in may prefer a simpler powertrain.
What to inspect before buying used
For a 2026 purchase, request the VIN, UK trim and original option list, then verify whether the car is a petrol or a specific Hybrid 180/225 version. Inspect hybrid charging hardware, infotainment behavior, tyres and body repairs as relevant, and confirm the manufacturer's coverage in the registration country. A price stated at the 2022 order opening is historical UK context, not evidence of today's used market value.
Alternatives and the verdict
Compare the 408 with a Peugeot 308 SW for more conventional luggage access, the Citroen C5 X for an alternative lifted fastback approach, and conventional family SUVs if headroom is the decisive factor. Do not merge it with the Chinese Peugeot 408 sedan or assume its original UK powertrains map unchanged to every European country.
