2023 Toyota Land Cruiser 70 — Wagon Buyer’s Guide
Scope: 2023 documented regional sale year; JP market evidence. Other markets may differ.
Specification note: Ratings and measurements apply only to the cited market, model and variant. Manufacturer claims are not independent road-test measurements.
Why the 2023 version matters
The Land Cruiser 70 name has covered many body styles and national markets, so the Japanese November 2023 reintroduction deserves its own carefully scoped record. Toyota put the traditional ladder-frame utility wagon back on its domestic showroom list with an updated diesel automatic powertrain. It is not interchangeable with 2023 Australian 70 Series configurations, nor with the Land Cruiser 250 that Toyota announced in 2023 but started selling in Japan in 2024.
Confirmed 2023 specifications
Japan's AX wagon uses the 2.8-liter 1GD-FTV turbo diesel, rated by Toyota at 150 kW (204 PS) and 500 Nm. The engine pairs with a six-speed automatic and part-time four-wheel drive. Toyota published a 4,890-mm body length, 2,730-mm wheelbase, five seats and a 130-liter fuel tank. Those numbers identify this home-market wagon and should never be copied onto an overseas single-cab pickup or a V8-diesel 70 Series.
Strengths, compromises and intended buyer
What buyers gain is a deliberately utilitarian machine with a body-on-frame layout and a focus on rough-ground operation. What they give up versus a conventional family SUV is the possibility of car-like noise, ride and handling compromises. The addition of Toyota Safety Sense and reversing assistance in this Japan specification does not make it equivalent to the safety systems or crash ratings of unrelated Land Cruiser generations. Actual driving and towing needs should dictate the purchase.
What to inspect before buying used
For a 2026 owner, start by confirming AX, production date, transmission and the jurisdiction in which the vehicle was originally delivered. Examine underbody impact, corrosion, transfer-case function, suspension modifications and documented maintenance; these are normal used off-roader checks rather than asserted widespread faults. Ensure any imported vehicle satisfies emissions and registration rules and that parts are ordered against its chassis data, not merely the '70 Series' name.
Alternatives and the verdict
A buyer with regular remote-area work may value its simplicity and high-torque diesel more than cabin technology. If long motorway trips and family comfort dominate, a Prado/250, Land Cruiser 300 or a mainstream body-on-frame SUV may be more appropriate, depending on market. Do not use the 2023 announcement of Land Cruiser 250 as evidence of 2023 Japanese retail deliveries.
