Applicable scope: Beijing, China; verify your exact vehicle and local requirements.
China’s vehicle inspection process is easily distorted when someone translates a rule from one city into an unqualified nationwide statement. Beijing’s English-language government service describes inspection and inspection-mark requirements for motor-vehicle classes. It includes a structure for eligible non-commercial small passenger vehicles involving physical safety checks in specified years after initial registration and inspection-exemption marks in certain intervening years, subject to conditions.
Begin with eligibility
Check whether the car is a qualifying small non-commercial passenger vehicle, a van, a commercial vehicle or another excluded class. Beijing’s guidance treats cars involved in certain injury-related accidents, illegal modifications and other circumstances differently. The registration date, current use, and modification or accident history can therefore change what the owner needs to do. A 2026 nameplate does not automatically identify its inspection year.
Why an inspection mark is not a repair log
Obtaining an exemption mark is an administrative compliance action, not evidence that the tires, brakes or steering have been physically inspected at that moment. Where a physical inspection occurs, it assesses specified compliance matters, not every scheduled service operation or hidden defect. Maintain separate records for manufacturer servicing, recall actions and any repair after a failed inspection.
Imported and cross-region caution
Do not infer an overseas model’s engine, emissions hardware or parts from a Chinese-market counterpart. Used buyers should verify the Chinese registration and manufacturer documentation and consult the actual local traffic authority when moving cities or changing registration status. The Beijing page is evidence for the described Beijing service, not definitive proof of every current city or province procedure. Where a car has a safety-critical fault, seek professional help immediately rather than using an inspection exemption as permission to keep driving.
A practical ownership decision
Because the government page sets out multiple eligibility exclusions, a useful owner checklist begins with use class, registration date, accident history and modifications. A single ‘six-year rule’ heard from another driver leaves those factors out. Owners should re-check the authority’s current service before relying on a reminder saved years earlier, especially when the car has changed ownership or location.
Safety and verification
This is ownership information, not a vehicle-specific diagnosis, repair authorization or parts compatibility determination. Confirm the exact model, market, service publication and current local rules. For brakes, steering, structural damage, airbags, high-voltage equipment or other safety-critical concerns, use qualified professionals and follow manufacturer emergency instructions.
