“Five stars” is a result of a particular safety programme, protocol, model and test period, not a timeless worldwide specification. For 2020–2026 vehicles, buyers should investigate what was tested, which equipment was included and whether the local car matches the assessed version.
A test year tells part of the story
Euro NCAP updates its assessment criteria and explains that older results have limits when used to judge newly built cars. ANCAP also places a TESTED datestamp alongside ratings, while a vehicle built during the rating validity period retains its assessed result. A test from 2021 should not be presented as directly equivalent to a result under a substantially revised 2026 protocol.
Check the car and safety package
Some ratings cover standard equipment while others identify an optional safety pack or specific variants. Different body styles, generations and imported specifications can change applicability. Latin NCAP and Bharat NCAP have their own assessment frameworks; neither is automatically a substitute for an European or Australian certificate. Look for a direct official listing of the exact model and scope.
Stars do not resolve every buying question
Independent assessments examine defined crash and avoidance scenarios; they cannot guarantee protection in every real collision. Vehicle mass, size, tyre condition, occupant restraint use and seating position matter in real life. Compare assessment subcategories and reports, then combine them with the practical fit of child seats, visibility and the car’s actual condition.
Look below the total star score
A safety programme can publish separate domains for occupant protection and crash avoidance. Those sections may expose differences that a star count obscures, especially where assistance technology was optional. Where a tested rating is described as applying to multiple variants, confirm the programme’s expansion or applicability statement. A fresh five-star rating with a different protocol cannot be assumed superior in every crash scenario to an older car without detailed evidence.
Who should choose it?
Use the most recent, applicable programme result you can verify—not a dealer’s unqualified claim of universal five-star safety.
Model-year and market scope
General guidance across 2020–2026; no crash star figure is attached to a particular model without a matching official report and market specification.
