Lane Departure Warning, Lane Keeping and Lane Centering

Three similar-sounding lane functions with very different tasks.

How the system works

Lane departure warning notifies the driver about a detected unintended crossing of a lane boundary. Lane keeping assistance may provide intermittent steering or braking input to help prevent departure. Lane centering offers more sustained lateral assistance to keep the vehicle positioned within a detected lane. NHTSA separates these as features with different responsibilities. A vehicle that vibrates the steering wheel at the edge of a line is not necessarily capable of following a motorway curve.

What it can and cannot do

Detection relies on sensors and software interpreting the road. Faded or temporary markings, roadworks, snow, glare, unusual intersections and sharply curved roads can reduce confidence. A system may pause, alert or drop assistance. Some drivers mistake the steering correction for a promise of future lane tracking; it is not. When lane centering combines with ACC at SAE Level 2, the driver continues to monitor the environment and the vehicle and must intervene as needed.

What changes between vehicles

Driver monitoring provides a separate safeguard. Some systems check steering-wheel contact or driver input; others use cameras to assess road-facing attention. Neither method guarantees the driver is ready to respond. Euro NCAP's assisted-driving work assesses driver engagement alongside assistance competence and safety backup. A feature that seems smooth on an empty road may still differ greatly in how reliably it communicates its own limits.

Buying and ownership implications

Used buyers should ask which specific lane function is installed, whether any operating-speed thresholds exist and how the car communicates unavailability. A camera near the mirror is not proof of lane centering. Windscreen replacement and certain repairs may require calibration; consult OEM procedures and invoices rather than trying to reset the warning. Observe the controls while parked and obtain the exact regional specification.

Regional and model-year caveats

The same car name may use different steering software, road-sign data and permission rules in the EU, UK, US, China or elsewhere. A journalist's account of one tested variant is not a global equipment list. Do not call lane-centering equipment autonomous driving, and do not claim hands-free capability merely because the steering wheel can briefly be released. Drivers must follow the supervision rules for the specific enabled function.
