A pickup advertised as able to tow a heavy trailer may have much less payload remaining after passengers, accessories and the trailer’s tongue or ball load are counted. For a 2020–2026 utility vehicle, these limits are related but different engineering and legal constraints.
Separate four relevant figures
Look for maximum braked trailer mass, gross vehicle mass, gross combined or train mass, and permitted axle loadings. Some manufacturers also supply payload based on a stated kerb-weight configuration. Adding a canopy, towing equipment, tools and people changes the actual loaded vehicle weight. The highest towing figure in a range is not necessarily available with the selected body, drivetrain and engine.
The combination needs a weight budget
UK government guidance emphasizes the gross train weight and the vehicle-specific manual or VIN plate. Calculate the actual loaded vehicle plus the actual trailer, and ensure both the individual limits and the combined limit are respected. A trailer that appears within a catalogue rating can still push the pickup over its rear axle rating or the rated hitch load. Local licence and braking rules also apply.
Compare utility with road use
Think about bed dimensions, secure load restraint, ride when empty, access to rear seats and how often you actually tow. A large diesel pickup can be excellent for a work duty cycle but unnecessarily difficult in congested streets. Do not declare two international Ranger or Hilux variants equal solely because a nameplate has a familiar towing headline.
Ask for the loaded combination, not the brochure maximum
For a family holiday, list every passenger, water container, luggage item, hitch accessory and trailer’s loaded mass. Compare the resulting numbers with the vehicle’s real GVM, axle capacities, hitch limit and train mass. If there is uncertainty, use a certified weighbridge and a specialist. Even factory accessory fitment can change the available payload, so a nominal figure based on the lightest configuration may be misleading.
Who should choose it?
Choose the exact rated combination for the job, including loaded weights and legal restrictions, rather than a global “best towing pickup” slogan.
