Applicable scope: Global; verify your exact vehicle and local requirements.
A plug-in hybrid has two energy bills: electricity and liquid fuel. Its appeal changes dramatically depending on the share of journeys made with usable battery charge. A commuter who charges reliably before short journeys faces a different cost structure from a buyer who rarely connects a plug. This is why an official weighted consumption figure alone is a poor estimate of an individual owner’s yearly spending.
Model your own driving first
Record average daily kilometres, frequency of charging opportunities, longer trips and highway share. Estimate electric kilometres from a model- and condition-appropriate electric range, then calculate purchased electricity using actual kWh per kilometre and tariff. For the kilometres likely to be driven by the engine, use fuel consumed per kilometre and your local fuel price. Do not assume the car will complete all trips electrically just because they begin below its nominal rated range.
A transparent calculation
The US DOE Alternative Fuels Data Center publishes its PHEV cost calculator methodology, including cases where regular daily use exceeds electric range. It explicitly allocates driving between electrical and gasoline consumption under stated assumptions. Copy the method of separating power sources, not its example outputs, which are not evidence for your own market and trim.
Maintenance and ownership still matter
The engine, fuel, emissions system and oil-service requirements remain even if the car spends much of its time in electric mode. A used PHEV buyer should inspect charging hardware and request a documented engine and hybrid-system service history. If your parking lacks convenient charging, compare the car as a conventional hybrid under your actual habits instead of using the optimistic PHEV label. If workplace electricity is free to the employee, show that as a personal assumption and not a universal feature or subsidy.
A practical ownership decision
Consider an owner who can charge only on weekdays. Weekend trips may shift substantially toward gasoline even though the official PHEV model has a large electric range. Rather than averaging an entire year from one commute, separate normal workdays, leisure journeys and exceptional long trips. This reveals whether paying extra for a plug-in system suits actual access to charging.
Safety and verification
This is ownership information, not a vehicle-specific diagnosis, repair authorization or parts compatibility determination. Confirm the exact model, market, service publication and current local rules. For brakes, steering, structural damage, airbags, high-voltage equipment or other safety-critical concerns, use qualified professionals and follow manufacturer emergency instructions.
