The original 2020 vehicle and its market boundary
Japan’s second-generation Freed received its important facelift in October 2019 and was sold in that form throughout 2020. Honda also offered a five-seat Freed+ companion, which has a materially different passenger-and-cargo layout even though it shares the basic platform. This profile concerns the three-row Freed; the Freed+ needs separate seating qualification in any crosswalk.
Powertrains and documented specifications
The Japanese period catalogue documents a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol model with CVT and a 1.5-litre i-DCD hybrid paired to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. Front-drive and certain four-wheel-drive forms appeared depending on grade. The transmission split is essential: the hybrid is not the same architecture as the newer e:HEV system fitted years later.
Changes and timing that matter
Honda introduced the CROSSTAR appearance variant with different trim and exterior details, but that did not turn it into a four-wheel-drive adventure model by default. The 2019 revision also enhanced rearward false-start suppression and equipped Honda SENSING more widely. Customers should confirm exact seating count, grade and fitted driver aids from the vehicle’s Japanese type label.
Everyday usability and equipment
Freed makes an attractive compromise between city width and practical family doors. The ability to carry six or seven people in a small body is valuable, but cargo volume with the furthest-back seats in use needs hands-on testing. The different powertrains are worth driving back-to-back on steep roads and in stop-start traffic.
Inspection priorities for a used buyer in 2026
In 2026 look for complete hybrid-system and gearbox service records on an i-DCD example, proper operation of sliding doors, cooling and air-conditioning, smooth pedal response and any signs of flood damage. Imported cars should be checked for Japanese infotainment services, diagnostic support and current VIN-level recalls.
Alternatives and who it suits
Compare Toyota Sienta when low cabin access and rear seating matter, or a larger Honda Stepwgn where luggage must accompany many passengers. The 2020 Freed is a precise late-2019-facelift product, not a 2024-generation e:HEV sold under the same name.
