2023 Kia K5 — Sedan Buyer’s Guide
Documented scope: MY2023; United States. Do not transplant this market’s specifications to another region.
2023 scope and confirmed powertrain
The 2023 US K5 is sold with a 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol four-cylinder producing 180 horsepower and 195 lb-ft in most grades, plus a distinct 2.5-litre turbo K5 GT producing 290 horsepower and 311 lb-ft. Kia pairs the 1.6T with an eight-speed automatic and the GT with an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. AWD availability applies to selected non-GT configurations, not the whole range.
What defines this 2023 vehicle
The model-year distinction is primarily its grade configuration rather than a full new platform or electrification launch. Kia’s own table gives different EPA combined numbers: 31 mpg for some front-drive 1.6T trims, 28 mpg for GT-Line AWD and 27 mpg for the GT. Quoting only the lowest or highest number misrepresents the alternatives.
Who should consider it
A K5 is attractive to a driver wanting a conventional spacious sedan instead of the higher mass and visual bulk of a crossover. The GT’s stronger acceleration and gearbox character are a different ownership proposition from the everyday 1.6T. Buyers should not equate more dramatic GT-Line exterior styling with the GT powertrain.
A particularly important buying distinction
The sportier K5 GT-Line badge and the 290-horsepower GT are not interchangeable designations. This distinction matters because gearbox and drivetrain choice change too. A buyer comparing internet advertisements should look past the front bumper and establish the engine and transmission before considering the listed trim as a credible comparison.
Checking a used example in 2026
In used examples confirm the transmission against the exact badge and VIN, test cold and warm shifting and check infotainment and assistance functions. Review tyre wear, brake history and evidence of previous collision repair. Obtain recall and service-campaign results for the car, rather than treating consumer-complaint reports as failure probabilities.
Alternatives and the decision
A Honda Accord, Hyundai Sonata or Toyota Camry may make more sense depending on hybrid preference, comfort and boot use. The K5’s most important 2023 purchase decision is the technical distinction between the 1.6T automatic, selected AWD versions and the GT DCT.
