The 2024 K5 is a sharp-looking midsize sedan, but its sculpted panels hide a meaningful split in the engine range. This is the pre-later-refresh DL3 specification, so a revised 2025 model photographed by a dealer should not be used to infer its interior or mechanical equipment. Buyers attracted to its design should first decide whether daily comfort or GT-grade performance is their priority.
Powertrains and market-specific specifications
Kia documents a 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder rated at 180 hp and 195 lb-ft in conventional US grades. The GT uses a 2.5-litre turbo rated at 290 hp and 311 lb-ft, a fundamentally different driving proposition. Available drivetrain and gearbox choices also change by grade: a K5 GT-Line is not mechanically a GT. Never assign the GT's engine to a car simply because it has sport-looking wheels.
Equipment, usability and model-year changes
Equipment differences include seating, screen, audio and driver-assistance packages, so obtain the complete trim identification. The low roof and coupe-like profile are desirable to some buyers but create a different rear-seat entry experience from an upright crossover. Family owners should test rear headroom with their regular passengers rather than accepting a single quoted passenger-volume number.
Used-buyer inspection and ownership trade-offs
A used example merits cold-start testing, checks for consistent shift behaviour, wheel and tyre examination and careful inspection of parking sensors. Ask for records showing correct scheduled maintenance; with any turbocharged model, evidence of modifications or hard use should be investigated rather than assumed harmless. Check VIN-based campaigns directly with Kia or the relevant local authority.
Which buyers should consider it?
Choose the K5 for a spacious saloon with a distinctive dashboard and strongly differentiated trims. The Hyundai Sonata is closely related but takes a different styling approach, while Toyota Camry and Honda Accord offer alternative powertrain strategies depending on model year. The GT is better treated as a performance sedan choice than a substitute for the lowest-cost commuter model.
