A genuine 2020 Chinese-market introduction
BYD brought the original Han family to market in China in July 2020. The launch covered fully electric Han EV derivatives as well as a separate Han DM plug-in hybrid, which must not be folded into a battery-electric article. The production vehicle was positioned as a larger premium-oriented sedan, providing an early example of a Chinese manufacturer moving beyond small affordable electric cars. This entry covers the Han EV as originally sold in China, not a later international Han brochure whose hardware or regulatory range might be different.
Separate the original EV versions
BYD’s primary July 2020 release lists two equipment versions of an extended-range front-wheel-drive EV, both claiming 605 kilometres on the NEDC cycle, plus a higher-performance all-wheel-drive EV. A contemporary independent report quoted an approximately 77-kWh pack and 550-kilometre NEDC estimate for the AWD configuration. That report conflicts with BYD’s published first-version variant descriptions, so its separately mentioned 65-kWh/506-kilometre specification is intentionally not promoted as a verified launch trim. Battery capacities in that report are not identified as independently measured usable figures, so they should not be converted into usable-energy guarantees. The 605-kilometre claim must not be transferred to the AWD version, to the Han DM hybrid or to later vehicles.
What matters to a buyer outside China
The Han EV showed BYD’s Blade Battery technology at its original launch and offers sedan space with an electric powertrain. Before considering a used import, verify the exact chassis market, high-voltage configuration, onboard charging plug, software language and cellular connectivity. A car built for China may rely on a different charging connector or digital service ecosystem from a vehicle officially distributed in another country. Finding a plug adapter alone is not evidence that the vehicle will charge reliably, remain supported by software or meet local registration requirements.
Why brochure range is insufficient
NEDC distance figures are regulatory comparison values under a particular older cycle, and actual results change with speed, temperature, tires, terrain and battery condition. Prospective owners should seek battery diagnostics and a demonstration of both ordinary and appropriate fast charging before making a decision. A sedan marketed as high performance also warrants checks on wheel, suspension and tire condition. Verify original equipment using documents tied to the car; importer advertisements frequently blur the distinction between front- and all-wheel-drive EV variants.
Buyer fit, alternatives and editorial limits
The 2020 Han EV is most interesting to shoppers with credible local service access who value cabin space and a historically significant Chinese electric platform. Avoid buying merely on an unusually large NEDC figure when charging or electronic support is uncertain. Contemporaneous Tesla Model 3 and Xpeng P7 models offer useful market comparisons, provided trim years and Chinese specifications are matched. This article makes no claim about later export homologation, crash ratings, resale prices, recalls or long-term Blade Battery life without VIN- and market-specific evidence.
