2021 BYD Han EV: first generation — CN
Model-year identity and market scope
The BYD Han EV occupied an important place in China’s 2021 electric-sedan market, but its generation launched commercially in July 2020. BYD’s later 2021 sales announcement confirms continued Han deliveries and substantial interest during calendar 2021. Treating the Han as a 2021-only debut would therefore falsify the chronology. This profile focuses on the original Chinese-market Han EV, not the later versions sold internationally under the same name with different homologation.
2021 powertrains and engineering
BYD announced the Han EV with its Blade Battery, with several pure-electric specifications and a separate plug-in hybrid Han DM. The manufacturer cited 605 km on the historic NEDC cycle for the long-range electric version and a 0–100 km/h acceleration claim of 3.9 seconds for its performance-oriented all-wheel-drive version. These are claims for two different variants, not a single universally equipped car. The original Blade Battery design was a major part of BYD’s engineering message, but that does not supply an independently measured aging or safety outcome.
Verified period variants
- Han EV long-range FWD (CN): Blade-battery pure EV; variant-specific output not generalized; single-speed electric reduction; FWD. 2020 introduced / sold 2021, 605 km NEDC long-range grade; test: NEDC
- Han EV high-performance AWD (CN): Blade-battery pure EV dual-motor family; single-speed electric reduction; AWD. 2020 launch quoted 0–100 km/h 3.9s AWD variant; not general Han rating; test: NEDC
Equipment, competitors and practical differences
One of the Han’s distinctive propositions was bringing large-sedan interior presentation and modern electric propulsion to China’s domestic market while competing with imported premium vehicles and the Tesla Model 3. The useful buyer comparison is charging access, body size and equipment, followed by warranty and battery documentation. A long NEDC figure is not interchangeable with WLTP or EPA range, and it should never be portrayed as a guarantee of winter highway driving.
Who should buy it, and who might prefer an alternative?
The rear- or front-motor geometry and electrical architecture should be checked in the exact Chinese build record before any assertion of kW rating or international connector. A household without dependable charging or a customer unfamiliar with local service support should resolve those questions before selecting a large battery-electric sedan. Likewise, avoid transferring 2024 overseas software or battery specifications backwards into a 2021 Chinese Han.
What a 2026 used buyer should verify
Used-buyer diligence should include pack diagnostic results from a qualified specialist, cell/battery replacement history, local charger compatibility, collision repair records and electric drivetrain noises. Confirm whether the car is Han EV or Han DM before comparing efficiency. A later Toyota, Tesla or imported BYD price cannot be used to establish historical 2021 value without a comparable market and date.
