Market and date basis: AU; documented 2020 on-sale calendar year (not necessarily a formal MY2020 designation). Australian post-27-August-2020 facelift only; earlier-year original eighth-gen pre-facelift is not overwritten.

An important mid-year Australian change

Australia sold the eighth-generation Toyota HiLux during 2020, and the significantly updated range began reaching dealers from 27 August. This entry tracks the facelifted vehicle, rather than treating every ute sold with a 2020 plate as mechanically identical. Toyota described revised styling, multimedia and chassis tuning, as well as extra engine performance. WorkMate, SR and SR5 grades were part of the August retail release. Verify the original build and sale dates, because an earlier 2020 HiLux can retain the pre-update output and a different equipment set.

Three engine-and-gearbox figures worth separating

Toyota rated the revised 2.8-litre 1GD four-cylinder turbo-diesel at 150 kW, with up to 500 Nm for the six-speed automatic, but 420 Nm for the six-speed manual. The smaller 2.4-litre 2GD turbo-diesel was described at 110 kW and 400 Nm. These are Australian manufacturer ratings, and they should not migrate into North American pickup articles or earlier eighth-generation HiLux stock. A seller quoting 500 Nm for a manual 2.8-litre example is mixing the transmission-specific figures.

Payload and towing are configuration questions

Toyota Australia specified up to 3,500 kg braked towing for compliant updated 4×4 models, whereas diesel 4×2 variants had a different stated limit. Towing and payload remain subject to the exact cab, axle, gross vehicle mass, ball download, tow equipment and license rules. A 4×4 badge alone is insufficient to confirm that a used truck can carry a full load while towing the maximum trailer weight. Inspect the compliance plate, accessory additions, tires and past commercial use rather than relying on one brochure headline.

Everyday strengths and weaknesses

The HiLux suits drivers seeking a working tray or tub, established service networks and towing or rural-road use. A leaf-sprung ute can feel compromised without a load; Toyota said its Australian engineers revised suspension tuning for smoother unladen travel, but that is a manufacturer statement, not our own road test. Higher trim multimedia features included smartphone connectivity and an eight-inch display, subject to original equipment. Families should check rear-seat space and child-seat access against a separate family SUV.

Used-car buying alternatives and verification

Compare the contemporary Ford Ranger, Mitsubishi Triton and the September-2020 new-generation Isuzu D-MAX, but match transmission, drivetrain and generation first. On a used HiLux assess service records, underbody damage, towing hardware, off-road modifications and differential or gearbox operation. Never infer a reliability score or actual repair history from the model badge. This record is limited to the Australian facelift launched during calendar 2020; earlier build stock and other countries are explicit future audit items.
