2021 Toyota 4Runner — N280 fifth generation (US)

The US 2021 Toyota 4Runner belongs to the long-running fifth generation, with body-on-frame architecture that sets it apart from most car-based family crossovers. Toyota’s 2021 Trail Special Edition adds visual and practical equipment but does not create a new generation or change the engine family. For prospective used buyers the underlying decision is whether genuinely useful low-range four-wheel-drive hardware outweighs a heavy, truck-like daily-driving experience.

Verified 2021 identity and market specifications

Toyota’s MY2021 announcement identifies the 4.0-litre V6 producing 270 hp and 278 lb-ft, paired to a five-speed ECT-i automatic. Depending on grade, buyers encounter rear-wheel drive, part-time 4WD with selectable low range, or another 4WD system; a trim badge does not by itself prove the installed transfer case. The manufacturer quotes up to 5,000 pounds of towing capacity for properly configured US vehicles, rather than a universal payload or trailer figure that can be exported to other countries.

Who it suits and trade-offs

The 4Runner suits owners who intend to explore poor surfaces, tow within documented capacity, or value a simple cargo-carrying body over efficiency and responsive acceleration. It is much harder to justify on exclusively urban commutes, where fuel cost, step-in height and parking dimensions become significant. A Toyota Highlander is more family-road focused; a Jeep Wrangler offers a different removable-roof off-road approach.

2026 used-buyer inspection priorities

Inspection should concentrate on frame corrosion in salted-road regions, evidence of underbody strikes, appropriate tire sizes, any differential/transfer-case maintenance and aftermarket lift or recovery equipment. Vehicles advertised as TRD or Trail should be checked against a factory build record: equipment and drivetrain are not determined by appearance alone. Scan for active faults and review service documentation before depending on a used 4×4 far from assistance.

Alternatives and model-year boundaries

Unlike a unibody RAV4 the 4Runner deliberately prioritizes rugged trail-oriented architecture. Its appeal is well defined, but there is no basis here for asserting a perfect reliability record, specific future resale value or that all 2021 grades offer the same differential and suspension equipment.
