2025 Toyota 4Runner: Specifications, Versions and Buying Guide

Scope: 2025 model year; verified variant jurisdictions: US. Figures apply only to the variants identified below.

The sixth-generation 2025 Toyota 4Runner is a substantial technical break from the older V6-powered vehicle. Its body-on-frame layout and roll-down rear glass remain central to the identity, but power comes from a 2.4-litre turbo four-cylinder family rather than the outgoing naturally aspirated six. A turbo-hybrid i-FORCE MAX option also changes the torque available for hauling and off-road use.

2025 Specification and Market Differences

Toyota gives the regular i-FORCE version up to 278 horsepower and 317 lb-ft of torque, with an eight-speed automatic. The i-FORCE MAX hybrid develops up to 326 horsepower and 465 lb-ft. This is not a plug-in hybrid and should not be described as having a meaningful externally charged electric range. Trim-dependent four-wheel-drive hardware and dedicated off-road equipment matter more than simply deciding hybrid versus non-hybrid.

US — TRD Pro / Trailhunter / Platinum hybrid 2.4 L turbo petrol plus electric motor; 4WD combined output: 326 hp; torque: 465 lb-ft

Who Should Consider It?

For someone who spends most of the week in suburban traffic, the 4Runner's height, weight and truck-derived manners may be harder to justify than a unibody crossover. But owners who regularly travel on rough tracks may genuinely benefit from properly specified low-range capability and the factory equipment of an Off-Road, Trailhunter or TRD Pro. Some grades add accessories such as all-terrain tyres that can change noise, fuel use and tyre expense.

Ownership and Used-Buyer Checks

Inspect a used vehicle carefully for underside strikes, recovery damage and modifications. Confirm the differential and suspension specification from its actual grade; accessories photographed on a press car are not proof that a base model includes them. Check for original wheel/tyre sizes, recall applicability and whether towing equipment was factory fitted. Evidence about six-generation long-term reliability remains immature and must not be invented.

Alternatives and Verdict

The Ford Bronco provides a different trail-focused experience, while a Toyota Highlander or Honda Pilot might be more comfortable if family road use dominates. Buyers after a durable tool for back-country trips should value the exact suspension, tyre and protection package over display size. This profile covers the U.S. MY2025 4Runner, not the regional Land Cruiser Prado/250 sold under a different name.
