2021 Toyota Tacoma: third generation / N300 — US

Model-year identity and market scope

The US-market 2021 Tacoma remained the third-generation midsize pickup. Toyota’s model-year announcement emphasized new special-edition choices, but the larger ownership question is whether a particular truck has the 2.7-litre four-cylinder or 3.5-litre V6, which cab/bed configuration it uses, and whether it is two-wheel drive or equipped with part-time four-wheel drive. The same Tacoma name can represent very different payload, towing and parking compromises.

2021 powertrains and engineering

The 2.7-litre four-cylinder produced 159 horsepower and 180 lb-ft; the optional 3.5-litre V6 made 278 horsepower and 265 lb-ft. A six-speed automatic was used with either engine, while a six-speed manual was possible on specified V6 trims. Some 4WD versions offered an electronically locking rear differential; others relied on brake-based traction aids. Toyota’s advertised maximum towing capacity of 6,800 pounds was conditional on the correct model and tow equipment, not a default rating for every Tacoma.

Verified period variants

  • 2.7 four-cylinder (US): 2.7 L gasoline I4; 159 hp / 180 lb-ft; 6-speed automatic; 2WD or 4WD trim-dependent. US MY2021 base engine
  • 3.5 V6 (US): 3.5 L gasoline V6; 278 hp / 265 lb-ft; 6-speed automatic or V6-only 6-speed manual; 2WD or part-time 4WD trim-dependent. Up to 6,800 lb tow with specific equipment; not universal

Equipment, competitors and practical differences

Off-road appearance packages can be expensive without necessarily adding the mechanical equipment a trail user needs. A buyer who mostly carries shopping and bikes might prefer the simpler four-cylinder, but a towing or mountain-road buyer should check documented trailer and gearing capability rather than guessing from engine displacement. The larger Tundra is a different class, while a Hilux imported from outside North America is not a market-variant Tacoma.

Who should buy it, and who might prefer an alternative?

The Tacoma’s combination of a separate frame, compact-for-US pickup dimensions and selectable 4WD is attractive for remote travel. However, its ride and rear seating differ from a crossover such as the Highlander; daily commuters should sit in the exact cab and test rear-seat ergonomics. Road-tax and emissions standards cannot be assumed from an Australian or Latin American Toyota pickup because those vehicles use different engines and certificates.

What a 2026 used buyer should verify

Examine chassis and underbody condition, corrosion, suspension wear, any lift-kit documentation, transfer-case engagement and evidence of towing modifications. Use the original tow label and vehicle equipment record rather than a general website maximum. Service-history quality is a more defensible buying signal than a claimed universal fault rate.
