The 2024 Tacoma deserves its own buying guide because it marks a complete generation change rather than a new grille on the older truck. In the United States, Toyota moved the midsize pickup to its TNGA-F truck architecture and redesigned the frame, cabin and suspension choices. That brings worthwhile updates for someone replacing a work-oriented older Tacoma, but it also means old accessories, towing assumptions and service procedures should never be carried over without a 2024 fitment check.
Powertrains, equipment and market specifications
For the US range the standard i-FORCE family uses a turbocharged 2.4-litre engine, with output reaching 278 horsepower and 317 lb-ft in the applicable configuration. A separate i-FORCE MAX hybrid version produces up to 326 horsepower and 465 lb-ft according to Toyota. Rear suspension matters: coil springs are fitted to many versions, but the configuration varies by grade. Available 14-inch infotainment hardware and off-road equipment likewise should be confirmed by the actual trim, not presumed standard.
Checking a used example
Before buying, decide whether the truck will tow, carry weight, commute daily or drive technical trails. Request the exact payload and towing label for the candidate vehicle, since engine, cab, drivetrain and equipment affect capacities. Inspect the bed, underbody, wheels and suspension for work or off-road damage, and verify the installed tyres against the documented equipment. A hybrid is not the same buying proposition as a non-hybrid Tacoma: repair qualifications, packaging and torque delivery differ, even though the badge is shared.
Who should buy it, and alternatives
The Tacoma appeals to owners who genuinely use pickup flexibility and may value its factory off-road grades. For primarily urban driving, a crossover is usually easier to park and more economical to package; for repeated heavy towing, evaluate a full-size pickup using its actual rated configuration. Cross-shop the 2024 Ford Ranger and Chevrolet Colorado in the relevant market, and judge cabin comfort and rear-seat space in person. This model-year guide does not claim a proven long-term reliability advantage for a freshly redesigned 2024 truck.
