What is distinct about this version
The 2026 US 4Runner is the second model year of the sixth generation. The nine-grade programme continues, with a newly optional stabilizer-disconnect feature limited to the specified i-FORCE MAX TRD Off-Road Premium.
The right reason to choose a 4Runner
A 4Runner makes the most sense when body-on-frame utility, rough-road durability of the overall layout and available off-road hardware matter more than effortless urban manoeuvring. It is not a direct substitute for a unibody family crossover. Buyers should check the selected version’s height, step-in, rear load floor and parking fit. A RAV4 may feel easier for an ordinary school-run-and-commute pattern, but cannot be judged as though it shared this truck-based engineering brief.
Understanding the two engines
Toyota’s available i-FORCE MAX hybrid gives much greater quoted combined torque than the non-hybrid turbo engine, but both use an eight-speed automatic in their documented US configurations. More torque may appeal to drivers climbing grades or carrying people and gear; it does not remove the need to read specific tow ratings and vehicle load labels. Fuel economy and ride behaviour depend on tyres, drive equipment and grade, so a Trailhunter is not a reliable proxy for every other 4Runner.
The 2026-versus-2025 decision
The sixth generation began with the prior model year; 2026 changes are incremental. Toyota reports a stabilizer-disconnect option on a specified hybrid TRD Off-Road Premium grade, rather than across the range. Available large displays and distinctive premium or trail-focused versions can tempt shoppers to compare very different build sheets. When evaluating a lightly used vehicle, inspect the accessories, underbody condition, wheels and any off-road modification separately from the factory specification.
